Beg to differ. The Panasonic mega zoom series pwns a canon. The only thing the canon can do better is in the video it takes. Panasonic cameras are much more detailed with the pics it takes. I have owned 3 canon cameras and will never own another one. Once I get the funds I am going to pick up the DCM-FZ20. Its the sh!t.

Review on the FZ20

Canon SD500 ...................90 x 57 x 27 mm (3.5 x 2.2 x 1.1 in)
Panasonic DCM-FZ20 .......128 x 87 x 106 mm (5.0 x 3.4 x 4.2 in)
hmmmmm... Do you think the Canon fits better in your pocket?

Wow, only took you 3 tries to find out Canon hates you?

    •

Sony DSC-V1
  • Same initial price and pocketable size.
  • 4X zoom
  • Hologram autofocus assist (can focus in no light at all, let alone low light)
  • Flash hot shoe...
The Infrared autofocus assist is the thing that makes it a true point & shoot gem. The full manual overrides make it an advanced shooter's joy.

Never mentioned you wanted it to fit in your pocket just wanted a better camera 😛

I am sure the slimmer cameras with the Leica lens they use on there camers will still produce a better picture.

Yes it took me 3. My first was a a s200 pocket camera I thought took good pics. I traded it for a Olympus that showed me the Oly took better pics then the canon. I go tmy tax money and wanted a better camera so I hit the wagon with all the fans of canon and bought a a75 that took maybe 1/4 of the shots I took indoors that were keepers.

I got a few more bucks and after not wanting to be screwed I check out reviews and put pic next to pic on all cameras with a big zoom under $400 and there was no challange that the ones with the FZ3 looked better then any camera in that range and even some that were even more money. I bought it. Then I wanted to edit video and found I didnt have a program to edit Quicktime so I stupidy traded for a Canon S1 IS after reading some reviews. The pics were not better but took better video so I traded it.

Well I just got done trading that off. With the canon when it did take a pic it looked good (still not as good as my FZ3) but I was getting 50% good shots and had to fug around with the camera to figure out a good shot and by then I lost my shot.

Next tax check I am getting the FZ20 and not going to buy another one any time soon.

The Canon shots look better than the fx7 I think, but otherwise it is a very close and fair comparison.

no other digital camera maker can fit such a nice package into such a small volume.

SLR-wise, i still prefer canon, even though some go with nikon.

sony sucks, they suck at everything. Just because they make everything doesn't make them good at everything.

But seriously, I'm a hardcore amature photographer and I really hate sony cameras. I hate how people even consider buying them.

and don't get me started with their audio equipment...

Yep, the T7 is nice

I would take any of these over any other manufactures in their respected platforms.
p100, p150, s60, s75, s85, s90, v1, v3, f707, f717

Final word: yes there are alternatives but if you don't care enough to research yourself, get the SD500 and be happy that you bought a Canon.

I just recently bought a new camera. I was looking at the SD500 but it was out of my price range (even with those insane dell prices). If I had the money, I probably would have bought it because I think it's by far the best ultra compact in the market.

off topic, I went ahead and looked between the SD400 and Coolpix 5900. I loved the size of the SD400 but couldn't get past the fringing and corner blurriness problems. My 5900 should be in tomorrow. It's a good thing the SD500 is a different beast compared with the sd400.

I thought posting the question on ATOT constituted research, especially, if I research, and then see if the folks here come to the same conclusion.

I personally find ATOT to be too full of Canon fan boys, any digital camera question and Canon is the answer and all others suck. Not that Canons aren't good cameras and not that I don't recommend a Canon to friends if they just want "a digital camera" but there are other quality options out there.

For instance, have you looked at the Casio EX-Z750?
