What comes after Socket 939?

How far away are we from it's successor? My Athlon XP2400+ served me well, but I'm thinking about upgrading it to a X2 4400. I will be using it for coding and gaming most of the time.

Thanks for any replies

How long will it be around...seeing as to how you can still by Athlon XP's, 939 will be around for some time to come. Of course I would never recommend upgrading within your Socket A system, per your other post.

Whether you care about how long s939 will be around depends on how you do your upgrading. I tend to always switch out my motherboard and processor simultaneously, making socket dilemmas mute.

Also, for me, upgrading about once a year is more fun than having the latest and greatest once every four years. If you are concerned about what the future will bring, stick with mid-range components that give you the most performance for the money. That way, you can change out your system to a new platform without feeling too guilty about it 🙂

I'm building a new system and decided just to go with s939 and when it comes time In like 2007 I will sell it and get the M2. This way I will have time to do some reseach and see what performs better in terms of CPU (Athlon FX or X2 on sM2)

Socket 939 should be around for another two to three years. When M2 hits, it will be the new high end consumer system for AMD. That means that there will likely only be one more speed upgrade for Socket 939 for single and dual cores. Then it'll be all Sempron64's released for Socket 939. That doesn't mean however, that the CPU's in the new Socket M2 will be much higher in performance power over Socket 939 for at least 6 months.

I still see Socket 939 as a very viable system for new high performance builds for at least another year. And I see it as a viable system to keep around for at least two years after Socket M2 has hit.
