What color is your volume control icon?

If you have it displayed next to the time/date.

Mine is gray color. But I swear it used to be yellow.

I wonder if mine is screwed up.

The Win9x icon is yellow, but the WinXP icon is a "high color enhanced" greyish color. (Not sure what color it is exactly, I can't tell.) If you have any other sound drivers installed, most of them install their own custom icon and disable the default.

Mine is cyan, but my TB Santa Cruz volume control replaces the Windows volume icon.

Cyan may well be the color mine is when it's showing. If that's something like red.
