What color are your Rotors?

I see a lot of rides around here with upgraded brakes or at least some new rotors. Thing is they are usually shiny like they were just machined. They spend so much cash on this stuff yet have probably worse performance than the car has stock in braking.

I don't think many bed in their brakes at all.

It took me a while to find a long enough road to do the 80mph stops repeatedly and not have to stop completely until cool down. When I was done you could definitely smell the brakes, if it were night I bet they'd glow a bit :).

I have been bringing my car in for simple maintenance lately as it's just not worth it to do oil changes when the dealer will do it for $19.95 and even top off fluids, give some of the hinges and suspension a shot of lube, etc. Plus the benefit of getting my car on a lift to do my own inspections.

Anyway, I had it in and two of the mechanics noted I was one of the first of their 'newer' customers to actually have rotors that looked like I did a proper bed-in. They asked where did I take it...

If anyone wants a procedure: http://www.zeckhausen.com/bedding_in_brakes.htm

I had a different one I used from Baer...but that one seems more accurate.

I have an 11 inch big brake kit on my CRX from fastbrakes and we made sure to bed them in good, after bleeding the lines multiple times and making sure everything was straight we took the car out and did some pretty fast stops. I have the 15/16 master cylinder on there now since the one before was way too dinky for the size of these brakes. They work great now and even on hard braking show no signs of letting up...but then again I have an extremely light car.

Would a properly bedded in set of brakes look different to a well used old set of breaks?

I agree about the oil changes. I take that a bit further and forgo the 10,20,30k mile services when my car just as much attention from the oil changes. So, you think this works on a minivan? I'm thinking with the increased weight I can get buy with lower speeds.

Yeah my bro had a 90 CRX back in around that year while we were around high school age.

The CRX was a great car in it's day and even now can be a freaking drag machine. I just can't get into FWD for my driving style and I love the SAAB Viggen :)

The funny thing to me is down here I would not be surprised if some idiot told you "Wow only 11" brakes, that better than stock really?" :)

I have 296mm x 30mm fronts and 297mm x 18mm rears (about 11.6/11.5"). The Skyline GTR had a 296mm x 32mm front I really wanted, but I got the lesser GTST brakes due to a shady overseas seller...but it was still a great deal and way more brake than I could use.

If I had more options at the time, I would have tried for the factory Brembos (330mm), I would have hunted down an ugly set and had them re-powdercoated and rebuilt. My problem was I had a rear right caliper that seized so I needed brakes NOW. :) Freaking coated my car with rust specks that I am still finding months later after spending two 15 hour days with claybar on my car.

I upgraded my master too, from 15/16 to 17/16...I would imagine that 15/16 on a car weighing 1000lbs less than mine is pretty impressive.

For bedding the brakes? 60-30mph should be fine for the normal pad/rotor.

I didn't have to do 80mph myself, I am only running Hawk HPS (street pads with basically no dust in my book). However; a faster top speed isn't detremental....just requires more space.

Prior to changing my brakes I did a simulated bed-in on my old ones to see if I had enough room and could get the brakes cool again without stopping completely. My biggest risk was the turn off from the road I did the actual bed-in on. It was a cross street I would have to turn across. Luckily I timed it right and blew the stop sign since no one else was coming. I did have to lock them up about 5 mins later though when some white van pulled out right in front of me....I should have still had fade, but they stopped on a dime and I slightly locked up for a millisecond even. I did the bed-in again the next week even though it was probably overkill....it was impressive to feel the stopping power.

A rotor should have some of the pad material transfered to it. The color really depends on the pad used.

If your's is blueish rather than silver, you probably have transfer.

i do see what you're saying, but what im trying to establish is how they would look different, the article says the rotor should have a 'blue tint' to it if properly bedded in, aswell as the pad material

dont suppose you have any pictures to compare?
