what color are the fluids in my car?

I have left some red stuff on the driveway....what could that be? Steering fluid? or is it maybe transmission fluid? help!?
btw - how can i tell if i need new spark plugs short of looking at them? are they hard to replace? thanks

also note its a honda accord from 1982
 
most likely the tranny, but possibly power steering or maybe even the radiator, if you use red anti-freeze.

The brake fluid I use is a very light gold. Red fluid is most likely Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF), but a lot of power steering systems use ATF too so it could be either. iamwiz82 is certainly right that the tranny is far and away the most likely source.

If you think about the car parked and leaking, from a top-view of the car, where is the leak? Front right? Front left? Middle right/left? Rear right/left? Center middle? That can also tell you what the leak is by where it's leaking from. Obviously the radiator isn't going to leak from the passenger side center and the transmission won't leak just under the front bumper...

Be sure to check your tranny fluid and power steering fluid now that you've seen the leak. Remember that as long as the leak is slow (ie you don't lose more than a quart every couple of weeks) that you are better off buying a case of fluid than fixing the problem.

Spark plugs aren't hard to replace. Usually when they start wearing out you will have trouble accelerating on an incline. When my plugs and wires went out the car would lurch if I was trying to go up hills. 🙂

You have to look at them, but unless they are platinum plugs (100,000 mile service life) they should be changed on a 20,000-30,000 mile interval. As for being hard to replace, that depends entirely upon the car. It's a 15 minute job to change all four in my Honda, but it's easily 45 minutes to an hour to change the four in a subaru (you have to remove the airbox). On Chevy S10 V6's you need to take off the front wheels (or so I've heard). General rule is that if the car is newer, the plugs will be a PITA to get at. There's just so much crap stuffed under the hood of modern vehicles that you can't change the plugs as easily as you once could.

you shouldnt run on spark plugs til they die. Replace them every 40,000 miles or so. Its not hard, as long as you dont have an LS1. 😉

it's actually right in the middle of the engine is where it looks the leak is comming from. i just noticed it a few days ago, it's not that much, but i'm sorta worried, since it's a really really old car and i don't have enough $$ to get a new one right now......so suggestion would be to take it to a tune-up or i could try and figure things out myself........can't be too hard to find is it.......heh, i'm not very smart when it comes to cars.......maybe i should change the oil too, it's been a few years on that....j/k but it probalbly needs one.....i geuss this weekend when i've got some free time i'll try and do a few things.......change oil, and spark-plugs.....any other small maintenance things i should try and do while i'm at it(in all my newbness?)

It's the transaxle (technical term for the transmission in a front-drive car). From where you say it's leaking it might be the seal where the transaxle housing meets the engine block. To replace it you'll have to pull the transmission off of the car (not recommended for anyone other than an experienced mechanic), plus you'll probably have to have the rest of the transmission checked over, probably they'll tell you that you need a rebuild.

no, its either gold, or purple or yellow, depending on the type used. Dirty brake fluid could be dark or black.

Actually, many cars use AT transmission fluid as brake fluid as well (just googled this and it appears that an 82 Accord DOES use DOT3 brake fluid, which is red).

So, Lithium381, the leak is either from your brakes or tranny. Where was the leak underneath your car? If it was in the front center, then it is probably from your tranny.

edit: yep, sounds like the tranny
 
probably tranny fluid... but i would check both, the tranny fluid and power stearing fluid, and see which one is low.
 
couple different fluids can be red... it's likely transmission fluid.. just check your level and see if your fluid is down, if it is, there is like a gasket leak on the pan or something down there.. its old enough, these things happen. 🙂
 
DOT3 brake fluid, which is red
I've got a bottle of gold DOT 3 brake fluid sitting in the front trunk of the 914 which would dispute that. I've only seen specialty brake fluids that were red or purple, and I highly doubt that he's got specialty (read: expensive) brake fluid in his car.

Tranny fluid is almost always red or purple.

Fluid colors:

Red: Trans fluid and Ford Brake Fluid.
Green: Coolant.
Light goldish: Brake fluid. Turns darker as it gets older. Can turn into a very very dark brown.
Brown: Oil.
Brown and foul smelling ( to you anyway ): Differential Fluid.
