Do y'all know the story of why Stanford has a tree? Would you like to?
No. Yes.
I went to college at USC and this is the story I heard when I was there. I'm not saying its the gospel truth, but its plausible at least.
Once upon a time, Stanford used to have an Indian Mascot .... I don't recall if it was Chiefs, Warriors, Indians, or whatever. Anyway, they were one of the first teams to bow to the political correctness and change their name.
I know from experience, and have a couple of stories I could share, that Stanford students have an interesting sense of humor. Well, they took a vote of the student body at the time and the Cardinal came in first place. That's singular .... Cardinal ..... not Cardinals. If you listen to sports broadcasters and commentators carefully, you will hear them refer to the Cardinal, not the Cardinals, when referring to the Stanford athletic teams.
If that wasn't strange enough, choosing a singular nickname (and this was long before singular sports team names like Orlando Magic and Miami Heat, etc.). Second place was the Trees .... the Stanford Trees. So they have a tree for a mascot. Notice that their athletic logo is an S with a tree in it, not a cardinal like their team name.
The rest of the story is that third place was "Side Order of Fries". I kid you not. How about the Stanford Side Order of Fries? "The Trojans were defeated today by the Side Order of Fries" LOL
