I'll be taking AP junior year, does that look good?! Will colleges understand that my school doesn't have clubs or school sponsored crap?!

What kind of community involvement would you guys recommend?!!

Also, I'm pretty much bent on staying in California, so UCSD, USC, UCLA (as if), UCSB, and UCI are primary schools. Others include Chapman, LFA, Pepperdine (yeah), and Brown just for kicks.

Yeah, just for kicks.

ALSO ALSO - I confess my arrogance.

sue me.

Too early to think about college admissions, kid. None of your stats are very impressive.

Highly capable writer (surprised, eh?), have won several city awards and recognized by school
Can't tell at all from what your wrote.
API score is above district average
No idea what mine was, but it's not an important metric anyways or else every school will use it.
Economically unfortunate
So are 80% of the population.
Nothing new about it.
Several familial alumni from mentioned schools
Legacy can help you, but don't hold your hopes high. UC's don't do legacies as far as I know.
Eager to volunteer, intend on assisting various film festivals in the city
"Eager" doesn't mean anything unless you do it. I was eager to complete the unification theory in high school, but that didn't take me places.
Expecting recommendations from several teachers...and hopefully *crosses fingers* principal
UC's don't read rec letters, and this may help you a little with the private schools.
Will accumulate 200+ hours of community service by graduation
200+ hours ~ 50 hours a year ~ an hour a week. Not "super" impressive at all. When I was in high school I did 100+ hours a year @ 2 hours a week.
Estimated SAT math @ ~590ish, SAT verbal ~730, Subject tests ~700
Good verbal, but you fail at SAT math. How can one possibly score less than 700 points on math?

Well, I missed almost half of my primary education. I'm retaking algebra for Christ's sake.

I only took 4 classes (including P.E) during freshman year, as my brother had mental breakdown and the family went kinda crazy...

How did you document hours? I've down a lot but I didn't know how to document or if it qualified as community service. What exactly did you do?!

Are you sure UC's don't read recommendation letters? UCSD only has a ~40% rate, which doesn't seem that bad.

If I start getting active now, calling the school, joining university sponsored crap...will that look good?!!

I just need to know what to do. The vice principal just says the only things I can control are GPA and SAT, but I know for certain my math skills are crap and according to you my GPA is unimpressive. Is a 3.9+ w/AP "unimpressive?

ARGH!!!!!!

You say not to focus on college or work to "get into college", but I did basically nothing freshman year, and now I'm trying to do everything!!!

You should've done community service through organizations with supervisors who can verify and sign time sheets for you. Unless you have those papers to prove it, community service hours mean NOTHING. EVERYONE inflates their hours and colleges know that, so if you don't have the logs they will think you're just another one of those people.

I'm sure UC's don't read rec letters. I did the apps four years ago and helped my little brother with his app last year.

You're overeager. Tons of med-school-centric friends from my HS didn't start planning until their third year.

3.9+ GPA is impressive iff it's not UC-weighed. I had a 4.58 GPA in HS and I didn't make it in the top 4% for local eligibility.

Not really. College board and schools recommends between 5-10 schools.
Of course they do. It's not THEIR money.

Probably, but I might as well try. Several members of my family have gone to Brown, and I currently have cousin attending.

~600 math is average right? Isn't ~740 verbal above average?

It's not that your SAT scores are below average, it's that they have to be quite a bit above average to get into the *really* good schools.

I'd stick to the UC system if I were you. Good education system, and since it's a state school it won't break the bank. Plus they're big, and have tons of clubs and groups and classes you can take to enrich your college experience. Go ahead and apply to Brown, you never know...

What's UC weighed? I know many public schools hand out sugar-coated GPAs like candy, but mine is rather greedy.

What is an example of a time sheet? My school has these community service forms, where supervisors initialize the hours...is that what you're referring to?

What about e.c? Do I just keep keep a record and then post in my transcript or whatever?

What about freshman year? I didn't document any community service hours, and I doubt I could get past supervisors to initialize hours. IF I just focus on sophomore/junior/senior, will that matter?!?!

I need suggestions! I really want to go to UCSD or UCSB.

How can you be sure of getting into your top 3 schools? You haven't even actually taken the SAT I nor have you taken any real classes as of yet. Schools will only get harder to get into as time goes on. Plus, just because you do well in a course doesn't mean your recommendation will be any good. You need to know your teacher well on a one-on-one level. If your teacher just drones on about how smart/good of a student you are, it really means nothing because the admission officer can already tell that from your transcript.

Don't keep your hopes too high, just work hard and be happy with what you get.

TRUST ME ON THIS ONE, ILL GET GOOD RECOMMENDATIONS. Only 100 kids in my grade and freshman there was less than 20 in my track. TRUST ME!

Apparently UC doesn't look at recommendations, according to one poster?

I just need suggestions, enough criticisms. This negativity is killing me.

most applicants to top schools have "good" recommendations. You need to make yourself distinct from the rest of the pack.

What If I was a Palestinian Jew?

HEY, IT COULD HAPPEN!! :D

My father was a UCI graduate (graduate school though). How far will that play?!

Do you guys honestly think I have a chance of getting in?

These are the "official" admission records for UCSD:

http://www.universityofcalifor...amp_profiles_ucsd.html

Doesn't look to bad.

With a stellar essay, positive recommendations, sort-of-legacy, decent grades, etc...

Also, since I'm set on majoring in film, should I devote all my free time to cinema-related activities?!

ALSO ALSO ALSO, How exactly do I keep track of E.C? Do I just write down what I did and that's that. What about community service related to cinema? The volunteering sheet is pretty small (for writing). Would initials from supervisors suffice, or do I need to design my own?!

GAH!!!!

btw for UC system:
recommendations don't matter
weighted GPA and SATs are everything. APs help your GPA the most.
Legacy means shit.

Oh crap don't come to UCI...ah well I'm out of here (five looong years) after this year so I guess its okay. I could totally see you joining AFI or Hillal and having stupid drama with MSU that dominates the paper week after week :D .

Either way only because you act so arrogant I'm going to chime in with the others and say "nothing special". I had clubs, activities, community service, bla bla, 4.2 GPA (4.0 unweighted...wait I might have gotten a B+ in my last quarter english class. Ah well I don't care. And even with that I think I was ranked at 10 or something because some people took literally 4-5 AP classes at a time. I was lazy and did 2) , and ultimately got rejected from UCSD and UCB - my top two choices at that time.

And LMAO at being a Jew, as if that will get you in :p

Letters of Recommendation.
UC does not require or solicit letters of recommendation for undergraduate admission.

Also, my school is highly academically concentrated. I don't have a 500 kids in my grade with half stupid people. Top 4% if a lot more hard in charter school limited in student populous than bloated public school with 500 kids.

There is only two honors classes offered for my grade, and only ~20 spots available. You had to have a certain GPA and teacher recommendation to get in.

My idiot friend apparently took all honors, so I guess mine doesn't matter. F**K!

If you're freaking out about going to college this much, I'd laugh when you actually get to college

I'm not sure your small mind can handle it, you might want to be careful!

Try to keep the number of schools you are applying to under 8. I think 6 is ideal. Additionally, I don't think you really need to be thinking too hard about college as you are just a sophomore. My recommendation is to keep your grades up, begin seriously researching colleges next year, and raise your SAT I Math score. Also, talking about how you started your own club would make a fabulous application essay, so I suggest looking into doing something like that.

To answer your question, though, I was accepted to Colgate, Bucknell, Lafayette, Lehigh, and Rutgers.

Weighted GPA is bulls**t. Everyone has a rocket average, but the courses are so filtered it really means nothing. Remember, my school offers ZERO AP COURSES, NO CLUBS, and basically NO SCHOOL SPONSORED activities.

I'm in ASB (A.k.a Leadership). Hopefully my API will seduce the officers. Hopefully they consider schools with higher levels of academic efficiency than prison public schools with a thousand dumb kids who make the mediocre ones look insanely intelligent.

Uh, nah... demographics are a bitch, it would be better to be from Alaska or South Dakota or something. So many people in California, they're not exactly in high demand from diversity-conscious colleges.

i just told you how. Get to know your teacher on a one-on-one level as opposed to simply in the classroom.
