What colleges accepted you?

I'm a sophomore and intend on apply to USC, UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCSB, NYU, BROWN, CHAPMAN, and possibly Northwestern and Loyola Marymount.

I'll like to know what colleges gave you the key, and the method in which he attained that necessary device...

I am confident I'll get into my top 3 colleges, but if I don't there's always suicide.


3.83 GPA (will graduate with 3.9+)
English/H
History/H
Algebra 1 (math stupid, don't hate).
Sp 1 (didn't take fl freshman)
Associative Student Body Cabinet Member
Environmental Science

Other:

Highly capable writer (surprised, eh?), have won several city awards and recognized by school
API score is above district average
Economically unfortunate
Jewish
Several familial alumni from mentioned schools
Eager to volunteer, intend on assisting various film festivals in the city
Expecting recommendations from several teachers...and hopefully *crosses fingers* principal
Will accumulate 200+ hours of community service by graduation
Estimated SAT math @ ~590ish, SAT verbal ~730, Subject tests ~700

School doesn't offer AP courses, clubs, and is quite limited in electives and basic course options.

Chapman seems the lone liberal arts university. Are you apply there for diversity?

Let me just say that I hope you have been saving your pennies all your life. Tuition is getting painful these days, especially at some of the schools you listed. Financial aid is no longer something that you can expect to cover much of your needs at all.

According to the website, I'd be paying ~20k annual w/necessities at the UC system. Chapman would be around ~25 with financial aid, which according to the website is offered to 80% of students.

My main focus is University of California Santa Barbara.

High school is pretty worthless. Grab a decent undergrad that you can afford unless you're going into something hyper competitive like I-Banking. Do well, then apply for a good grad school/professional school. Study for your math SAT, 590 isn't great. Won't close any doors but it won't open any either.

Just a note: don't let the financial aid statistics fool you. I wouldn't doubt that colleges will offer minimal amounts of aid to students so that they can pad the percentages.

Case in point: a small, private university offered me a whopping $500/year in financial aid. The cost of tuition? $35k.

Anecdotal evidence is never a good thing to go by, but I could see this possibly happening to many a middle-class student. The best thing to go by in terms of what to expect for financial aid would be the "expected family contribution" portion of your FAFSA.

EDIT: IMO forget NYU unless you're rich and know what you want to do. Their high tuition doesn't seem worth it otherwise.

That's a crapload of colleges to apply to. I mean, this is way past covering your bases, and just pure ka-ching! for the admissions departments. If your application is that good, why waste money on all the schools you don't want to attend?

Might want to re-take the SAT, though, that math score is kind of low...

Might I recommend U of Arizona? It's a great school if you're willing to work at it (better than some of the UC schools and as good as some of the better ones). It has great engineering, science, business, education, and medical schools. I don't know enough to tell you about its other programs.

Best of all, it's dirt cheap as far as tuition. Even out of state tuition isn't too bad (I think it's less than $10k/year and has a lot of tuition waiver programs). The students complain every year when tuition goes up by half a percent... but the complaints stop when everyone is reminded that you'd pay much more elsewhere.

You guys think I have a shot at UCSB? I'll retake the SAT a couple times, I'm studying really hard on my math but I was absent 70% of primary education so I don't know how far that will go.

I think I can make Junior or ASB class president...maybe.
