There is a huge bias in the professions. Some I agree are prestigious, others............ not so much.

And I love how I get lumped into a profession that has AP clerks and Partners of accoutning firms all mixed in. Yeah for being an Accountnat/Auditor.

I averaged a whopping 86th percentile.

When I put EMT as my profession it bumped me way up. But I make a lot more as a ski instructor/caterer then I do as an EMT. Most EMTs in my area make $1 an hour and $7 a call (we are volunteer only). Paramedics make about as much as most teachers.

But anyways, between the two I am at 38th(waiter) and 49th(emt) percentile. Which doesn't make a lick of sense.

Just goes to show there's an assload of poor people out there...and what you see as average is actually much better than the true average.

Pretty sad...

Although was nice to see Canada has a higher class mobility than US, UK and France :)

A "Computer Systems Administrator" contains more prestige than a Judge, Dentist and Pharmacist?
I'm calling a big SHENS on this chart.

In that case I should drop out of Pharmacy school now and keep doing what I'm doing now(working $14/hr as a "Computer Systems Administrator" for my college dormitory) since it's more prestigious.

It sounds like you're too caught up in the prestige aspect of jobs. And your post is very self-serving since you're going to school to be a pharmacist. Of course you want everyone to believe that your current career path is very prestigious.

Top 5th for me.

I mean what kind of survey includes extinct occupations like telephone and switchboard operators? Unless you?re somewhere in the 3rd world.

Education and salary is upper middle, occupation and wealth is low middle. Damn those student loans and not having a house yet. AN auditor isn't that prestigious I guess.

EDIT: N/m, found the right one for accounting/auditors. Guess I saw account someorother and chose that. What I get for doing things without having my glasses on.

The ranks of the lower income are growing, the middle class is shrinking and the upper class is going status quo. The average MAN in his 30's now makes 12% less than his father did when in his 30's (after inflation)....like the ole saying...the rich get...

That study you reference is very difficult to read into...there's so many variables.

Wow, according to the charts, I'm upper class. WOW! I figured middle class or upper middle.

I guess part of it is a I hav a good income ($70K) and if I liquidated everything, minus debt, I'm looking at half a million

The "prestige points" or whatever of each of the different jobs has nothing to do with how much money you earn. It says right on the site, it's determined by a poll given to a bunch of people where they ordered all the jobs from most prestigous to least. So if a judge scores lower than an IT guy, it's because in most people's eyes the Judge is a less impressive person. Keep in mind most people are morons.

I'm pleasantly surprised by this thread, I was expecting the normal ATOT response where everybody makes over 100K and they all have master's degrees and paper their walls with 100 dollar bills.

I looked at this website and it means little or nothing to me.

Wealth can not be measured in Dollars. Different places in the USA have different costs of living. So $50,000 in income in New York and Tennessee can mean different things.

Often wealth does not make a person happy anyway. It is all relative. I have often seen people that had menial jobs that seemed quite happy. The mere concept of class is somehow unamerican.
