i'm doing a fresh install of xp pro on a compaq that now has win 98 first ed. it more than meets the recommended requirements.

what options do i have for the drivers for chipset, video, lan?

is it a bad idea to use the drivers that came with the pc?

thanks

It's highly likely that the chipset drivers are already on the Windows XP CD. What model Compaq do you have?

XP will probably detect the hardware automatically. Just take a look in the device manager when the install is finished to see what it didn't detect. Run windows update and see if there are any drivers available and go from there.

Well, if that's one of those black slimline Presario models, based on the Cyrix MediaGX chipset, then you just plain SHOULD NOT upgrade to XP. There are NO W2K/XP drivers. Stick with Win98se or WinME, or toss the computer.

(Ok, technically, you can install XP on a MediaGX system, I've done it. But your video will come up as unrecognized, but XP somehow is able to drive it at 800x600 @ 16-bit color, but un-accellerated. You will not be able to load a driver for the integrated sound card. Also, the IDE ports (on the Cx5520) are PIO-mode only, which means the HDs will be awefully slow.)

If it's a different chipset, then you should have no problem, as every other major chipset mfg does have XP drivers, and most likely they are included on the OS CD.

i have xp installed on my presario that had 98 also.

it runs fine. the chipset on mine is a 440bx. xp has drivers for it. you can allways download the intel inf installer
