Ranger/Mesmer

Level 7. Man, I hope I get some useful ranger skills soon, because right now I might as well just be a mesmer.

I have two right now. A lvl 9 Warrior/Necro and a lvl 5 Elementalist/Mesmer. I'm stuck with the Warrior cause I need to get into the Northlands or go to the Academy. I don't look forward to the academy but I know I'll have to do it. So far I've been pleased with both characters. :)

I'm a ranger/necro lvl 11.

using like 90% ranger stuff 10% necro. I think I'm the only ranger without a pet too.

What sort of ranger stuff are you actually using? My skills seem really lackluster.

With the ranger stuff, you really do have to drop almost all your attribute points into only a couple fields tho.

I use favorable winds + dual shot + ignite arrows a lot. It's essentially 20 point area of effect bombs every 2 seconds or so. I replace dual shot with point blank shot + power shot once ignite arrows runs out. I'll drop mark of pain on particularly nasty looking groups. Not a whole lot in PvE lives long by the time they get near me and in PvP, it has the wonderful tendency to make their monks come up to the front line to do a heal area.

In PvP I generally craft a ranger to a need. Like troll unguent + quickening zephyr + vampiric touch turns me into a damn frustrating tank.

Another thing I like to do when I want to throw a curve is troll unguent + dark pact. Lots of damage really really fast, but drains energy like crazy. Useful in nolin academy tho if you have to kill things on higher elevation than you are. Bows suck shooting up.

Monk/necro and ele/monk are my mains though after reading the above I'm really tempted to dust off or reroll my ranger. A little armor would be a good thing and after rolling a number of alts getting from 1 to 6 dosnt take that long. Also a ranger without a pet would be nice to try, I hate wasting 2 spell slots on the darn small dot.

necro/elem here and working on a monk/ranger.

N/E is a pretty good combo heavy hitting spells and leech. Gotta love putrid explosion, I can complete most missions using just npcs and myself. Right now I'm at the part where you have the scepter of orr or something. Fought a couple boss bone dragons and they were a cinch, it seems you get better drops playing with other ppl but a lower chance at getting the item. With a few leech spells you can be a tank if you wanted to, makes it real nice cuz you can drop an aftershock or whirlwind to knock down foes and then cast inferno/meteor.

Well let me give you some background. I rarely play a game more than 5 hours. Guild wars has lasted 10. From this perspective, it is worth buying. However, for those of you looking for serious longevity... I'm still not sure.

It isn't really a good idea to compare it to WoW. The style of play is very different. I see it as a nice breath of fresh air after playing WoW a lot. It seems like a lot less pressure, a lot more about the environment and experience, and a lot of things are very interesting, new or not often used ideas. Whether these ideas ultimately lead to a lasting experience is where I am uncertain. I'd say it's mostly a cooperative RPG and fun PvP system with some mmorpg elements that add additional fun. My main complaints stem around not understand half of what's going on since it is dissimilar to most games I've played recently.

I have a necromancer/mesmerizer. I chose mes as a kind of afterthought to try to be unique, but as it turns out is is an extremely fun and complementary combination. I just got a necro skill that damages people when I put a hex/curse on them, and I just got a mes curse that damages people when they attack. Basically I can kill enemies with debuffs now.

I hate empathy. It's the only reason I leave a spot open in my skills bar for distracting shot. ok, not the only reason, but it's up there.

is that the one where you get dmged everytime you attack (with your weapon)? hehe it's a pain but I just use stone daggers. Rapid firing spell that costs only 5 and deals pretty well dmg depending on the armor type.

If it ever does get by, I counter with troll unguent(regen +5)... and make sure every shot does as much dmg as possible.

fame ,:) , your own guild hall, bragging rights...

just like any online team game like CS, BF, HL2,WoW... :D

Your char starts at max lvl, I think you get standard equipment (i'm not sure since I haven't made a pvponly character). You don't lose much, prolly your pride after you get creamed by those crazy clans from Korea/Europe/US...

meh it can't compare to fps, wow pvp speaks for itself and without 100% lootable corpses guildwars sounds little better, if at all.

That said, I have enjoyed dota (5v5 single unit rts style pvp, unqiue skills, combinable items, etc) for a long time now. I just can't see guildwars pvp being any good at all. I think dota has such appeal for me because each side has uncontrollable ai units that are there to help you. Guildwars pvp is players only right? Without the ai element of it I think dota would suck too.

I suppose battlegrounds in wow could be cool with the ai having such a large role, but I doubt i'll be coming back to find out.

You can hire henchmen in Guild Wars to complete your team. Not sure if that is what you are asking.

Well that helps I suppose, but not much. I'm basically saying that in this type of game and with no rewards or penalties beyond pride and a guild house straight player vs player holds zero appeal for me.

Throw in constant ai action with players really just assisting in true hero/officer roles (with ai being the grunt soldiers) and it becomes a far more enjoyable experience.

Warrior/Necro... i find the combination MUCH better than Warrior/Monk that i started off initially as. I'm probably only going to go through the RPG only, and not do PvP since i only play at work (tried PvP, but it was just way too distracting).

I think there are npcs in the PVP areas. Like I said before it's a 3D version of DOTA. I also played lotsa DOTA before this. In some of the PVP I've done in the beta, I remember storming castles (defending/attacking) and there were npcs. I dunno how it is in the retail. I'll let you know once I get there in a week or two. :D

edit: all the DOTA names were taken too (the day before release)... :( I wanted Luna Moonfang or Furion stormrage, or even Pugna the oblivion...

haven't tried nehrub seran or Clinkz as possible names yet... :D Queen of Pain would've been nice as well...
