I?m upgrading both our phones in our Cingular plan. In our plan we have a Treo 650 and Motorola v200.

For the Treo 650 replacement I thinking of going with a slimmer phone so I was looking into the Motorola SLVR L7 w/ iTunes $99 or Motorola RAZR V3r $199 or Blackberry Pearl $249. I want something that has MP3 ring tone playback, Bluetooth and hoping Aim software built in. Also easy to connect to computer and hack it.

For the Motorola v200 I need to replace it with a flip phone again, but it must have Bluetooth.
I was looking at the Sony Ericsson Z525a (anyone have this, can it back hacked?)

What do you guys think?

Are you buying outright or getting part subsidies through Cingular?

Also, why the big focus on "hackable" ... what are your plans for that?

Have you looked into the Motorola Q? I personally am a fan of it and like the slimness of the body, despite the rather larger footprint. You would notice a big jump in voice quality coming from the 650...it would be like taking the mud out of your ears! :p

Wait, is the Q even available for Cingular?

I'm going to get them through Cingular. Through their upgrade program online.

What i mean by hackable is that you can install that Motorola software and load your own music or backgrounds instead of paying for them through Cingular website.

A guy at work had the RAZR and we got the software and were able to customize it.

Too wide, trying to go smaller.

Ah, gotcha. Haven't run into that wall yet, but it seems like provider-induced-pwnage is an American thing.

$200 seems steep for a RAZR on an "upgrade" plan ... Rogers gives away two of those for free on a 2-year contract up here. I'd go for a used, unlocked phone myself.

$200 for the regular RAZR with music seems high. It has a rebate though of $50. I think i'm still under contract with Cingular so I cant really leave them and getting this phones will only extended for another two years.

In your shoes, I'd rather buy the phone from an outside source and not have to extend my sentence. You don't have to switch providers, just use the Cingular SIM in the new phone.

The Pearl is nice, played with one yesterday... but I do agree with m4h on getting the phone from a different source.

Have you checked out the Blackjack?

I think I'm going to get the Motorola SLVR L7 on Ebay, If i get it through Cingular I pay $149 up front -50 rebate later, but extend my contract. On Ebay I can get it for almost the same price an unlocked.

Besides Ebay, are there any other reputable cell phone sellers?

Blackjack.

Just made the switch from the 650 and i'm happy. IM+ is a crappy replacement for verichat but other than that I find the phone to be far superior,
