I'm all about sony's...but most of the CDs I make are audio and that's what Sony does best, I know it shouldn't sound different because it's digital, but my Sony CDs tend to sound better than my Verbatims.

I saw a 100 spindle of Sony's for $69 (not shipped) on Pricewatch...Silver/Blue. I coulda sworn that Silver/Silver is always better...?

I would think that generic silver/silver is better than brand name silver/blue...right?

hmm.. don't know why, but noone has mentioned Maxell CDR's..

I can get them in Packs of 20 (with Cases) for $25 Canadian. up here that's a really good deal. I've already gone through 2 of those 20 packs, and NO coasters. NONE.

These CDR's are a light bluish green on the bottom, and are rated at 8x.

I'm on a Ricoh MP7040 IDE version upgraded to the 7060 version. I burn at 6x (unless doing a CD to CD copy without an image file.

Also, I've never had a problem with them in playback on CD players, or CDROM's.

now, the thing I want to know, is, what are your favourite CDRW's? I want to know, becuase the 3 I have from Memorex suck pretty bad. no CD player can read them (nor DVD player), and even my CDRW has trouble with them. they have a silverish colour on the bottom.

What are your favourite CDRW's? I've seen an Acer CDRW do well on normal CDROM's (a little bit of trouble), so that's what I want to get next time I get some CDRW's.. what do you think?

zippy--you're wanting hard and fast answers, and they ain't none....er, at least very few. Closest is Mitsui. Be happy you weren't trying to work this out 4 years ago.

Hey, no one ever said you could have perfection and cheap, also. For me, I'm still trying to find the "happy" medium for audio. I've got a friend that just bucks up and pays the Mitsui price.

I've also got a buddy that is now testing cd-rw's to see if he can find any that will work in "most" DVD players. He's getting several different brands from me tonight. I dunno, I think for VCD's or something.

Interesting that you should mention "Generic 650MB Silver/Silver bulk CDR media". I just had 200 delivered to my door 20 minutes ago. BTW, their shipping ain't the cheapest. I won't have a chance to give a yeah or nay on them until at least this weekend. Reason? I use my brother's sorry, lame BOSE factory cd player that came with his van as my "worst case" testbed, and I won't see him until at least this weekend. So far, out of over 2 dozen brands (ID'd) I've tried in it, it will only read two. Mitsui and Imation Tayio Yuden's (MADE IN JAPAN ONLY--and, I don't know if they still have TY make any for them--I haven't seen any for a year).

If you want to research ATIP ID's, check CDSpeed 99 home page, and, I can't remember for sure, but some other linked sites off of cdrinfo and gamecopyworld.

Deeko--how about hitting us with ATIP ID's of the Sony's, and the outer box model number? Here at my desk, I just happen to have a Sony CDQ-74BN. And, it ID's as:

ATIP: 97m 24s 00f
Disc Manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden Company Ltd.
Assumed Dye type: Cyanine (Type 0)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 656.40MB (74m 43s 00f / LBA: 336075)

So, Deeko, I'm gonna have to give 'em a try this weekend. I haven't yet.

randypj, are those "Generic 650MB Silver/Silver bulk CDR media" from CDExpress? :)

If so, I'll wait till you find out how they fare in all of your tests before I buy. :)

zippy--Yep. What gave it away? The comment about not so cheap shipping? BTW, you might want to email me in a week if I haven't posted. Also, don't hold your breath. I will be under no time constraints for the next 10 days.....vacation....

You might want to do some testing of your own. Buy a few different singles or 5 packs. As an aside, my bro finally did what I asked. He just got a player for his car, and took at least 4 brands of my burns into the place and tried 'em before he bought the unit. YES. Finally.

I have been meaning to try www.cd-recordable.com cd's. Eric of CDSpeed rates them highly. I have always wondered if they are, in fact, the "American Mitsui". They have sample packs also.

Anyone have feedback on the cd-recordable cd's?

Generic 650MB Silver/Silver bulk CDR media" from CDExpress
----
ID as Ritek....YUUUCK. But, I'll give 'em a whirl. Very generic looking, see thru, light pastel green from the bottom, generic silver on top (plain, glossy). The right kind of dye.

ATIP: 97m 31s 07f
Disc Manufacturer: Ritek Co.
Assumed Dye type: Phthalocyanine (Type 7)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 656.69MB (74m 45s 00f / LBA: 336225)
----

Duh....it just dawned on me...why not open the box and see what Plextor sent me? I believe someone earlier mentioned TY from Plex.

ATIP: 97m 24s 01f
Disc Manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden Company Ltd.
Assumed Dye type: Cyanine (Type 1)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 656.40MB (74m 43s 00f / LBA: 336075)
----

Just curious--odd thing is that for PSX backup of my legally owned games, seems like thin, generics work best. Comments?

Memorex are not very good Cd's. They scratch really easily.

Cd's that i've heard read the best and last long are mitsui and taiyo yuden. Kodak and TDK comes in next.

Generic 650MB Silver/Silver bulk CDR media from CDExpress:
Preliminary good news, but I've only burned one. It buffers flawlessly on my weinie portable cd player. Previously, only TY and Mitsui had.

Deeko--Your burner or cd-r has to support it. Plextor's do. I use CD-R Identifier. Quite a few burner progams will identify them now.

Oh, the cd that came with the Plextor is TaiyoYuden--labeled "That's CDR" on the jewel case.

Questions:
1. OK, maybe I'm just stoopid, but, I can't get Nero and cddb to automatically insert cd text track titles. Appears to connect fine, and shows the cd title correctly. I'm guessing maybe I have to save it as a User Database? That's my next try. Hints or FAQ's?
2. Anyone that archives their rips to .mp3? I'm still using BladeEnc DOS-style box. Nero appears to have Fraunhaufer codec. I definitely want quality. Speed of encoding is not an issue. Suggestions? BladeEnc still OK?

what? no info on CDRW's?

heh, I checked out that CD copy world site, and noticed that they didn't say anything about the readability of the CD's they tested. only the length and burn speed.. stuff like that.

zippy--The results are in. I burned (5) of the Generic 650MB Silver/Silver bulk CDR media from CDExpress at 12x. All 5 played in my brother's van player without a hitch. Only the 3rd brand of over 24 that I've tried, that actually play in this player.

All 5 buffered skip to my cheapo portable. Again, only TY and Mitusi had previously buffered.

They would NOT play on my buddy's Toshiba DVD player. He hasn't found any that will.

So, for me, I'll be going with them. Hey, they come as simply a wrapped stack. No spindle. I use sleeves or wallets anywho, not jewels. I just ordered 100 Tyvek sleeves to go with 'em.

Let me know how they work for you. YMMV. Good luck.

randypj, I don't remember, but did you try any Maxells on that player? I have NEVER had any complaints on mine (yes I've occasionally given some to others..)

Still no info on CDRW's!?

Soccerman--Yes......lots and lots. They were the CD-R74, reorder #623310. I had lots and lots of friends, relatives, and dogs that needed the $60 rebated Maxells.;) I think I had almost 1K at one time. Gotta say, for me and a buddy, they weren't too great for PSX or picky car players. They do fine for data and in my home stereo. Won't play in my bro's or buffer to my portable.

Check CDSpeed. I think Erik shows they error pretty darn early in the cd.
