Acer(Pioneer), TEAC, Toshiba for CAV CD-ROMs

If you can spend a little bit more, the Kenwood TrueX is extremely quiet.

you're probably gonna get a million plextor replies

my ultraplex does DAE at 38X, nothing else comes close

A Teac 540E is a very good CDR. Rips audio great also for a very low price. I typically get 34x with no errors at all ripping audio. Plextors are great too but are quite expensive.

If you are privy to the deal then the Plex 40x drive is very nice. Otherwise I like Toshiba drives myself. I've heard that Kenwood drives are problematic and that there have been lawsuits filed against them. You might get one that rocks the house and another that's busted.

1. Plextor, by far
2. Kenwood, I've heard it's really good
3. Asus, I love it and it's affordable
4. Toshiba, I've heard great things, but I've had a few die on me

Well if you have SCSI Plextor 40x is the only way to go.
But since everyone has failed to mention that plextor doesn't make an IDE CDRom they might not be an option for you.

I'd go Asus or Toshiba for an IDE CDRom, TEAC is suppose to be quite good to but I've never used one.

You should change the header to read What IDE CdRom drive is the best. Unless you really DO want a million plextor replies.

I find that the Sony & Toshiba 48x IDE cdroms perform quite well.

Creative is considered loud? It's not that much louder, is it? Anyways, quick search on the net says it's a 52x and around $40, which's pretty darn good. Incredibly reliable, reads all kindsa cdrs, great for ripping too. Anyways, I'm keeping my creative. If anybody wants to sell theirs, I'll buy another!

I put one of those Kenwood 72x beasts in my wife's machine, and it's faster and quieter than any other I've seen.

What about DAE speeds? I have a Plextor 40x max that rocks for DAE but that's about the only thing it's really good for... I hate this damn thing! It takes 10 seconds to initialize on bootup, won't read anything but pressed CDs, and is really loud... I've got to RMA it but once I do I will probably be looking for something else, preferably IDE. Which IDE drives are the best for DAE?

the most common concensus is that the plextor ultraplex owns. everything else is second best.

Asus is decent but they're loud mofos, and they arent really any better than TEAC and Toshiba. I highly recommend Acer, their laser and mechanisms are made by Pioneer, top notch quality stuff.
