There was a time in my life when I actually owned 5 Kenny G albums. It's strange the kind of music pathways we take as we mature. I still think "Songbird" on the Duotones album is an excellent, haunting track.

Bahaha that's funny, only because I can relate. I too had a big "smooth jazz" phase where I just thought that shiz was the be-all end-all. WTF I was thinking I have no idea. I suppose it was just a stepping stone on the way to the vast terrain of musical tastes I now enjoy. :)

Songbird was like his only decent song, in restrospect :D

L2c and Mirthrander,

There are some things that you should probably never say in public. Saying that you own Kenny G albums might just be one of those:p
But hey, at least it's not Michael Bolton :D

If I am going to listen to "smooth jazz" I'm gonna put on Miles or Stan

Has Mr. G done a sone we have all heard?
I know he is infamous for sucky music, but err. have I ever heard it?
I guess out of some sort of morbid curiousity, what is one of his more well known songs?

I had 2 of his albums, too. Soul Provider and Time, Love and Tenderness.

But you have to put it into perspective. Alternative music was very much underground when I listened to wussy stuff in the late 80s. Big radio stations only played mainstream, watered-down crap....that's all naive people like me heard. Fortunately, I went to college in 1991 right when Nirvana opened the floodgates. So you walk into your freshman dorm with your Kenny G and Michael Bolton albums but by the end of the semester you're suddenly listening to NIN, The Cure, Sonic Youth and Nitzer Ebb. How liberating.

"Silhouette" is probably his most memorable instrumental hit. Of course, I'm not familiar with his more recent material.

Wee I can safely say Mithrandir was suckier than I, for I never owned any Michael Bolton CDs. ;)

But as for your second comment, Miles Davis and Stan (Getz? That's who I assumed you were referring to) wouldn't be considered smooth jazz. They both fall into a bunch of jazz subgenres (namely hard bop, post-bop, and cool), but smooth jazz ain't one of 'em.

Smooth jazz is more polished and less improvisational... sort of a "big picture" sound as opposed to traditional jazz where the individual parts are the center of attention. Kenny G is smooth jazz along with other saxophonists like Boney James and David Sanborn. Some smooth jazz combos are Fourplay and the Rippingtons. It's really quite a striking difference when compared head-to-head with something like Coltrane or Monk.

The evolution of smooth jazz has caused a lot of critics to declare jazz to be dead. I dunno about that. Hopefully with the electronica/jazz hybrids we can evolve past smooth jazz someday. :)

I love her stuff. I wish her friends Red Snapper hadn't broke up.
Why are you guys suggesting stuff he already has? Go with Aimee Mann's CD... excellent. Other awesome newer stuff:

l2c

I wasn't suggesting stuff he already has, in fact I was making no suggestion at all. I was saying I liked this particular artist. I was also making a comment that the group Red Snapper, who she is friends with and they have worked with each other, had broken up and I wish it wasn't the case.

As for my suggestion, i absolutely love Avril Lavigne's album, Let Go.

This is one of the best albums i've heard in months! :)
