I need to get a new cd-rom because my Creative 52x piece of junk, sounds so loud and can't even run Age of empires or UT, or probably any game that needs the cd to load.

I would prefer a cd-rom drive because they cheaper, any suggestions.

I bought an AOpen 12X DVD from mwave. It was about 75 shipped. Fast and quiet. Everyone swears by Toshiba if you want quiet though.

I have a 56x Majic spin that I bought at office max and it's fast.
Reads all data CDRW and Packet writting. 7ms access time.
only the Kenwood is faster at 72x but has problems with CDRW disks at times.

I also bought that same AOpen 12xDVD (like 42x reg. cd I think) from Mwave, but I think it's kinda loud personally. I guess it's subjective though. That's why the only redeeming feature of my old CD-Burner is that it ONLY reads at 8x (regular cd speed). So I use the fast Dvd drive for installs but the dead silent 8x reader when playing games.

Acer, Toshiba, and TEAC all make fast CD-ROMs, but TEAC is not as quiet as the other two. Acer and Toshiba also make great DVD-ROMs.

Yep, Toshiba's are whisper quiet. You'll be able to find a good deal on their 12x DVD-Rom.
Toshiba's are also known for their ability to better read sub-channel data. Which can help for copying CDs if you have a burner.

There's a hot deal for the 12x Toshiba for like 65 dollars shipped. Also, UT doesn't require the CD to play, just patch it to 4.36 and it'll bypass the cd check.

Asus 12x!!!

Look here: CDspeed2000, Asus is the only 12x DVD drive then keep up with a 12x burner, for on the fly stuff. And its a lot quiter then your 52x creative. The newer pioneer 16x DVD might also be a good option. Or if you want fast and quit in CD-ROM territory, the TEAC 40x is a good option.

I have the Kenwood 72x. It is definately fast and it is the quietest CD-ROM that I've never heard!!! (pun intended). I don't use many CDR's, only have a couple of times but without problem, so I can't really comment on that issue.

My friend bought the Toshiba 12x dvd due to all the great feedback, and while it's a very quiet drive, and is fairly fast with dvd extraction, the cd data extraction is way slower than his asus cdrom.

He finds the toshiba hideously slow in fact. Dead slow. crap slow.

and yes, dma is enabled.

My pioneer 6x dvd lets me burn 12x disc to disc on the fly which is impressive.
