<< Thor_Sevan: The friend of yours is full of it. Get a drive with so-called "Burn Proof" or "Just Link" technology and you will not burn coasters. Testing has consistently shown (at least with BurnProof) that you can absolutely stress your system to the limit without worrying about the CD burning going on in the background. >>

His friend is NOT full of it. Your response is conditional and only valid if the drive has "burn proof" or equivalent. But not every drive in the world has this feature, and esp. in the past, IDE drives would in fact experience buffer underruns and other probs when doing any other than burning the CD. That's why so many people went SCSI. Shoot, even screen savers could interrupt the IDE drives.

My recommendations would be:

Plextor
Yamaha
TEAC
TDK

Although the Aopen drive suggested sounds decent as well. I haven't used any of their CD-R/CD-RW drives, but I have used quite a few of their CD-ROM drives and they were quite decent.

As for those who question/dispute Plextor superiority, I disagree. The big key to their drives IMHO is their excellent drive motors. Their software has always been top notch as well - Plex Mgr., Disc Dupe, and CD Res-Q (which I do believe predates Ghost and Drive Image).

Quite a bit of dis-info being spilt about ISO9000 here as well, but not worth wasting the space to address it in full. It sure isn't "just insurance regulations" that's for sure. Where do people get this kind of stuff (ideas) from anyways? Certainly not from actual, real-world experience ...

Midnight... i know this is not the place for a pissing match but...Yes, ISO is more than just silly insurance regs, but not much. and yes, this is based on real world experience. it's part of my job. and yes it's applicable to this b/c i work for a major mfgr. of not only mother boards, burn in boards but also all types of contract manufacturing of pcb's for companies that make everything from fire engine tanker controls to medical equipment. trust me, i know my ISO. and just b/c a facility has ISO standards in place it does not mean their product is A #1 quality. it helps, but does not make it fact. I'm just saying don't let ISO certification be a determining factor. Intel and AMD's QC standards for example are 10x better/higher than the ISO standards.

I'm real happy with my Creative 12-10-32X, although I don't think mine came with Nero :| purchased it about 1 month ago. I also have never owned a Plextor to compare to.

Why the hell has no one mentioned Ricoh? I love my MP7120A, it's a great CD-RW for a good price!
there is nothing about this drive I don't like, and the newer Ricoh model will even playback DVD's.

quite nice drives, and I use Nero with mine too, best software and hardware IMO.
