why do people yawn? is it effective for humans to yawn? do other animals yawn? why is it that when you watch someone yawn, you have an inner urge to yawn too?

i think it's a lack of oxygen to somewhere in your body...causing you to yawn big gulps of air...
dunno about the contagious yawning tho...
but as always...someone here should know :)

1. Contrary to what you might think. You are actually inhaling when you yawn. You are taking an extra large breath to increase the low oxgygen level in your blood.

2. Yes, many animals yawn.

3. That's a myth.

Theory #1

1. Yawning is induced by hypoxia (low oxygen levels in the blood stream).

The idea behind this (the most popular) theory is that yawning causes you to take a deep breath when you need some extra oxygen - perhaps because you are tired are have not been breathing enough. These are MANY problems with this idea, but the main problem is that yawning occurs only when you are tired and does not occur in the many other instances of hypoxia. For example, if you exercise hard you need more oxygen - but your body makes you breath harder, not yawn! If you are brought from, say, sea-level to an elevation of 20,000 feet within a time period of 5 min, you will immediately faint due to severe hypoxia, but you will not yawn.

I read a long article about that in a plane. If I remember correctly the basic bottom line is... We don't really know why! ;)

Funny thing is that about half way trou the article he made a point and said by now you probably fealt like yawning... just like you reading this now... aren't you... right ;)

Yawning Is Contagious
Dr Karl S. Kruszelnicki

"Why is a yawn contagious?

The short answer is that we still don't know. But we do know that even thinking about yawning, or listening to this story, can make you yawn. Cats yawn, babies only 5-minutes-old yawn, and even fish and birds go for the big stretch. You're more likely to yawn just after you've woken up - or just before you go to sleep, or if you see someone else yawning.

But why do we yawn?

One theory claimed you yawned if you had too little oxygen in your blood. But you yawn even if you are breathing 100% pure oxygen. Sometimes you yawn if you are tired, but highly-alert athletes often yawn just before a big event. Soldiers will often yawn just before an exercise.

People are most likely to yawn in that first hour after they've woken up, or in that last hour before they go to sleep, or when they're tired, bored, or doing long boring repetitive tasks. People riding on fairly empty trains late in the day tend to yawn a lot.

If you smile, you'll probably get a few people to smile back, but yawn, and the whole room yawns with you. And if you don't believe me, ask yourself if you've yawned at least once during this story. And if you haven't, thank you for being so interested, and good night."

The urge to yawn is caused by an imbalance by the amount of oxygen within your body and outside of your body, As you yawn, you equalise oxygen levels but also change the amount of oxygen outside of the body which causes a disequilibrium in other peoples systems, causing them to yawn as well :)

Yawning is contagious because there is only a finite amount of oxygen available on the planet. When you yawn, you take more than your fair share of oxygen from the air, which causes someone else to now have an oxygen deficit. This person must now also yawn to make up the deficit. Of course, their yawn takes more than their fair share of oxygen from the air, which causes someone else to now have an oxygen deficit. This person must now......

PS:
Population is NOT increasing on the earth. Since everyone on the Earth has 2 parents, it is safe to assume that with each passing generation, the Earth's population acutually DECREASES EXPONENTIALLY!
