what causes random freezing?

i was running win2k adv server and i figured it must be all the services and programs that was causing random freezing (no blue screen, just freeze)...and so i tried installing XP...but its doing the same thing...and somewhat noticably when watching media...i'm thinking it must be hardware. anyone know of common things to cause this kind of freezing?

First thing that comes to mind is overheating. Check the temp monitor, heatsinks, fans, etc. and un-overclock if you're OC'ing at all. Could also be a piece of hardware going or a driver issue of some kind (kind of unlikely with two different OS's, but you never know). Hard to narrow down without more info.

if this is the rig in your sig, then grab the 4 in 1's here
next if you are running any usb devices I suggest going to www.usbman.com going to the drivers link, then via, and grabbing the usb filter patch and any other relavent patches.

actually, system is now:

Duron 800 (not O'Cd)
512 Crucial PC133 RAM
Generic 300 Watt PS
ATI Rage 128 w/ TV
no usb devices. in fact, no cdrom, floppy either 😀...my computer gets pulled apart quite often...

its kinda funny actually, on one occasion, the computer froze (ie. not taking inputs) while watching TV, but the tv kept playing just fine until i decided to restart. must be video card? system runs at hottest at 45 degrees c and normally at 40 degrees.
