What caused the power outages?

Just curious as to what caused the power outages, haven't really had time to watch the news... since I was watching a comedy show, hehe.

It was a terrorist DDos attack on major power grids using air conditioners!!

:Q

j/k 😱

/Kokomo NEFNEFNEFNEF!

nah, they're still researching it... not terrorism... they said "natural" whatever that means.
I got to leave work early today because of it though...

No one really knows yet.

The Canadians like to blame the US though...
One possibility was a lightning strike in the Niagara region on the U.S. side of the border, according to the Canadian Department of National Defense. A spokeswoman for the Niagara-Mohawk power grid said the cause was still unknown, but that it was not a lightning strike.

A spokesman for the Canadian prime minister's office said the cause was a fire at a Con Edison power plant in New York.

Canadian Defense Minister John McCallum blamed an outage at a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania, but the state's Emergency Management Agency said there had been no problems at any of the state's five nuclear plants and that all were operating normally.
I like how every paragraph starts with the Canadians blaming some US site...yet none are substantiated and 2 are even refuted. 😛

I bet it was those damn shifty moose.

It might have been some kind of overload from using 100 qwazillion air conditioners. Or maybe someone spilled some beer on the control board.

could someone explain to me exactly how this grid works? from what i've seen on tv it was a chain reaction that shut down a few dozen power plants. how are these plants dependant on each other? if plant X explodes why would plant Y even notice. what stopped it from spreading further?

I *THINK* under normal circumstances powergrids can load balance across multiple grids if one goes down. In this case, such a heavy load was being used due to tons of air conditioners turned on it just overloaded everyone that tried to take on the roll over load.

Guys, the exact same thing happened back in 1965.

Terrorists, bah! Bull crap!

you think they woudl have expected this to happen again

yeah.
You must admit that it looks very very similar. Back then it all started in a small place close to the Niagara falls, just like today. Then it spread when all lines were overloaded, just like today.
