What carriers still have roaming charges?

I'm curious. A friend of a friend went to Philly this weekend, along with another friend, and I tried calling him, and he texted back that he didn't want his friend using the phone because of roaming charges.

I thought if you were on AT&T or Verizon or T-Mobile, that they had a nationwide network and you weren't charged roaming, even if you went out of your local area.

Is this not true?

What carriers have roaming charges...all of them? Extra charges to roam another network is universal as far as I know. Occasionally my phone will pick up a Canadian tower if I don't turn off roaming, and I get a text about it every time it happens threatening additional charges (Verizon).

Philadelphia is a weird place to get roaming though, especially with major carriers. Which one does this friend use?

obviously virtuallarry is talking about nationwide roaming, not international roaming.

maybe your friend assumed he was going to be charged for roaming? have him look back at his plan. unless he's still in those ancient regional plans, he should be ok.
