What carrier controls your phone number ?

Was reading a forum and someone posted a link to the site below, it allows you to see what company owns your telephone number .

I use voip for home phone service and was surprised to learn the number I use is owned by a cellular company, not affiliated at all with the voip provider.

Cell # = AT&T Mobile
Current Home VOIP = Sprint
 
No new info on my landline. Although it does say location "Unknown." Looks like I've got a leg up on the search engine!

Damn, that website can even get the name of the current user of the number. Wow. That makes me unhappy.
 
Level 3 originally owned my home number, now it's owned by Optimum Lightpath (makes sense, considering it's VoIP from Cablevision/Optimum).

I like that you can look up the caller ID without the number being called.
 
I'd forgotten about this but whenever I call my parents from my cellphone, it just shows Golden Valley, MN. Is there any way to change what comes up for your number's caller ID info?

Not sure who controls that info .
I know with callcentric I can set the person who is calling me number to display whatever I want. So my mother calling me just shows up as MOM.

That is controlled exclusively by your carrier. However, if it's currently showing the City, ST (LERG data), your carrier may not be willing to respond to Caller ID queries at all... which is odd, because they make money on the dips.
