I'm looking for a video card for my new build and dont know if if the 7900gt or x1900xt would be overkill for a gaming/ design rig.

Gaming is only CSS.

I know the 256 x1900xt is a good buy now , but think it may be overkill. Or the is it just right?

What do you think?

what resolution are you going to be playing at? at anything less than 1280*1024 a 7600gt would do, higher than that i would reccomend the x1900xt

If the x1900xt offers more bang/buck, what's the point of getting a cheaper card?

Well , if i get a 7600gt cheap now, i would shoot for a x1900xt when DX10 comes around. Maybe ill be able to pick up a good deal.

He only plays CSS at 12x10. I don't think the extra $100 will get him more bang for the buck.

True, but he said that he plans to go to a widescreen monitor in the near future and the resolution would then probably be closer to 1680x1050.

OP, the 7900GT or the X1900XT would do you fine. Unless you want to give us anymore future plans or specifics, flip a coin.

Well I Just built a new system with an X1900XT (512 version) and all O pretty much play is DOD:S. It's a source game so its close in oerformance in what you would get. I'm 90+ FPS all the time at 12x10 all settings maxed. I'm satisfied and I think you wouldnt regret it either :)

I would suggest thay you get a 1900XT, as no other card may let you play at:
1280*1024 MAX
6x AAA
16x HQ AF

X1800XT Will
CS:S is not that demanding of a game.

But he said he wanted to upgrade maby in the future to a WS (most likely 1680x1050) then he will probably want that X1900XT (i'd get the 512mb version while you still can)

Uh...I have a GF6800GT and I game at 16x10 max settings just fine. If you turn down/off the AA & AF for multiplayer, my fps hovers usually 70-140...
In HL2 with settings maxed and 4xAA, 8xFF I get 35-70fps, which is certainly playable.
CSS is not that demanding of a game...

6600GT here at 1280x1024 all settings maxed, 2xAA, 4xAF.

that shows you how capable my card is.

7600GT/7900GT/7950GT or the equivalent ati cards are good for you. dont go too expensive if you want to save up for directx10.

No, it is not. Open box means refurberished and only comes with 15-30days warranty AFAIK.

I would rather spend few dollars more to get 2-3yrs warranty. Few days back there was a 1900XTX selling for around 300$ after rebate.

seems super overkill suggestions.

I have a X800 GTO^2 OCed to X850XT PE speed and CS:S auto-detect my setting at 1680x1050 on max detail, Full HDR, 8x AF, 4x AA. Even in CS_Office, the FPS hovers around 40-50 fps (30 min). You can easily get a X850XT or GTO^2 for ~$100 now. No need to blow $300 on a card.

I second the 7900gs if you can get the 150.00$ best buy deal.
Should be more than enough for CSS at high resolutions.

Edit : Something I took from another thread. This guy has a 1800xt and a 3800 x2 and scores 138 fps in CSS at 1680 x 1050
