Thanks for the suggestions and info everyone, there are quite a few possibilities I guess, neither are from makers she (or I) have owned before (except honda), which usually affects someone's decision making.

Subaru looks interesting especially with its reasonable stickers. For me I've always trusted honda so its hard to overlook the pilot. Come to think of it my friend's dad bought a pilot recently for almost the same reasons that my mom is considering one. Some other good suggestions too.

The next step is to get her to go test drive them. I wish I could do that with her, altho I live 2k miles away.

The Pilot is nice too. My parents just bought one last year and they love it. However it's a bit more expensive I believe, and the few times I've borrowed it it feels like you sit pretty high in it and drives more SUV-like than car-like. My mom is pretty short and she has to 'step up' to get into it. It's excellent otherwise though - drives well, has plenty of interior space, and one of the safest mid-sized SUVs.

I'd say definitely have her test drive a Pilot and Forester at least. A WRX wagon might be too small interior-wise if she's used to a minivan, and she probably doesn't want a sporty tuned suspension like the one in the WRX if she's retired. Legacy wagon or Outback are good options if not the Forester too.

I hate having to lower my ass to get into a vehicle (I can't tell you how many times I've smashed the back of my head into the roof on the Escort), and I dislike climbing, though I do it rather often). Minivan seats are at ass-height, so it works out well.

Irrelevant to you, but I posted it anyway :p

Two suggestions:

Chrysler Pacifica: Very nice car like ride as it's based on the old 300M platform. In my area all Pacificas are $7,500 off MSRP so they are a good bargain and the loaded Limited model comes standard with DVD/screens, Chrome 19" wheels, AWD & 3.5L 250HP 250TQ!
Lots of cargo room! Seats 6!

Ford Freestyle:
Based on the 500 platform which is based on the Volvo S80 platform. While the engine is only 200HP you can configure AWD or FWD and the interior is very roomy with a car like ride. Seats 7

Other ideas:
Used Satrun L300 Wagon - Super cheap and I like their looks
Saab 9-5 Sport wagon 3.0L Turbo V6 200HP or 2.3L Turbo Aero for 250HP
Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback Wagon if she like compacts
Audi A4 Sport Wagon
Vw Passat Wagon - heavily discounted so a decent bargain but crappy VW reliabilty lately
