ok folks i got about 6000 canadian dollars (around 4000 u.s.) or so to spend on a car.
My parents really want me to get a 95 ford escort they saw for sale for 5900.
I want to get a honda civic or a little mazda or another japanese car. they say these cars are too expensive . also they say they are rated bad in their lemon aid used car book. But i have driven an escort and hate it.
anyone know any other cars for around this price that are good on gas and reliable, hopefully not too ugly either like the escort :)

Get an early 90's Accord, you should be able to find one in that price range. I just picked up an 89 for $2730 USD. It's a nice little car for the money, & nicer than an Escort.

I own a '92 Ford Festiva. I drive it almost a hundred miles a day to and from work. It now has 195,500 miles on it and burns not a lick of oil. It goes through wheel bearings and tires more than any other car I've owned, but 12" wheels going 120kph spin pretty fast. It's tiny, but stalwart and brave (never ducks when a big truck passes.) It's mostly Mazda parts, so you can have your Ford and eat rice too.

Really, it's a great (little, tiny, miniscule) car if you're just starting out, and want someting to bang around in.

I'd go for a Honda, reliable cars. If you're looking for something with speed, Dodge put out some Shadows in Canada that came equipped with a Turbo V6 (Same engine that's in the Dodge Stealth/Mistubishi 3000GT). And you should be able to find them cheap (a '94 generally goes for around $5k American, so a 93/3 should be in your range). But if you don't care for speed - then definitly go for a Honda

Hondas are great cars for reliability, The biggest thing to take care of reliability issues with a car though is to take care of them right. Oil changes radiator flushes, Thermostats seem to always go bad in most cars replace it if it seems to not be working correct it's $3 and usually 1 clamp and 2 or 3 bolts to change. If you take care of the car right it will last along time.
