cool, affordable, fun to drive cars:

2003 Subaru WRX (note: 2003's are going for dirt cheap because 2004 models are getting a facelift) - I've had alot of time with this car and defintely one of my alltime favorites.

2003 VW GTI 1.8T or VR6 - cool little car with some good power delivery - I Drive a 1.8T daily and love it.

2003 Mazda 6 - damn fine family sedan w/ a bit of sportiness - Never drove this but it looks promising!

2003 Mazda Protege Mazdaspeed - Best Protege I've ever driven.

2003 Dodge SRT-4 - Dont dismiss as "Just a Neon"

like all the other naysayers here, this car is a contender.

Here ya go man! These are a few of my personal favorites, each well worth their 20k-ish price tag!

Acura = Honda, just incase you didn't know... So the reliability of Hondas are there with the Acuras as well. Since Acura is considered a "luxury brand", only the RSX falls into your price range. The TSX is a nice car, but I think since its brand new Acura is getting the $27k MSRP for it right now. A used Acura CL or TL is definitely an option... but personally, I would go new too if I could afford a new Accord or Maxima.

Toyota Camry is an awesome car but kinda boring to drive.

Safe, excellent resale value and one of the most reliable cars ever (assuming you properly maintain it).

Check out the VW Passat, also. It's at the very top end of your price range, but it's a nice car. There have been a few build quality issues in the past though.

bad experience, with EVERY american car, or which ones? never have had a bad experience with any gm we have owned. (all we have ever owned)

you could go look at a grand prix pontiac, used go for cheap, and a reliable car too, semi sporty

probably because in general, american cars' reliability isnt quite up to the major japanese manufcaturer's standards. my family has had bad experiences with most the american cars they had too, and mitsubishi as well. seems like hes looking for reliability the most, staying away from used cars as well.

Yeah if you go Japanese, definitely stay away from Mitsubishi ... my experience with them is that they're NOT reliable. I've had an '86 Galant, and a '92 Eclipse and both of them were going completely down the tubes as they approached 100k. The Eclipse was at 80,000 when I sold it, and the transmission had already been replaced once, fixed twice, and was about to go a 4th time I think. I know plenty of other people with horror stories on their mitsu's... edmunds.com even did a writeup about how they're the Homer Simpson of car companies! (Reference Link )

thanks will stay away from them. I was actually not considering them even do I didn't know why

Listen to what Ross said about the Camry. It is a superb car in terms of reliability, but it feels more like a *yawn* boring type of car than something that excites. However, I don't think anyone would ever question its reliability. The Solara is the same in terms of reliability but it does not carry the same kindof resale value that the Camry does because of the recent unpopulaity of 2-door cars.

If I wanted a car with bullet proof reliability, something that will still run 20 years and 200,000 miles from now I'd buy a Toyota Camry.

If you search for a bargain you should be able to get a brand new 2003 Toyota Camry LE automatic 4 cylinder for around $17,500 - $19,000

*gasp*, you think the Camry exceeds the Accord in reliability? ;) j/k.. If you're in it for reliability I think either the Accord or the Camry would serve you well. Both are proven to be reliable cars in either the I4 or V6 forms.

I don't think the V6 Accord is really boring (esp. in the 6spd Coupe version- But thats around $25k), but if you want exciting I think one of the other cars like the Mazda 6, or the WRX is definitely more fun to drive than the Accord. Maybe you want to look into the RSX/TSX, if you want to stay with Honda/Toyota, I think they're both fun cars and pretty much in your price range. Might be able to bargain for the TSX and spend a bit of your own money or something ... The interior of the TSX is very nice, probably nicer than a lot of cars on the road today minus maybe Audi and BMWs. The TSX will also out-handle a lot of cars on the road, including the RSX.

If you're only going to keep the car for 5 years, I don't think you need to worry about bullet-proof reliability though... You just need something that will last you a few years, which most cars would be able to do you right I think.

I found the Camry's ride to be a little boat like ... you should also consider the Subaru WRX, Mazda 6 and the brand new Honda Accord.

Actually I'd probably buy the Honda Accord, I think it's best in class for retaining it's resale value.
