Well, i'm going to try real hard to get a good paying computer job when I turn 16. I do NOT want to drive a 87' Oldsmobile Nighty-Eight Regency Brougham (Damn thats long!). I was thinking maybe a 85' BMW 735i and get my dad to repaint it. Or maybe a 85' Mercedes-Benz 190. As you can see I am a big fan of Euro cars :D

I would say that as long as the olds is in good shape save your money and invest it or put it in a money market fund. Many people make the mistake of spending a lot more once they get a job or once they get a better job. You have to plan for the future and save right from the start. I know that you want to reward yourself for getting the job, but try to hold off for a while.

Go for an Audi. They're cheaper than BMWs and Mercedes, and are comparable in quality. I would stay away from any automatic audi, though, those suck and give out after 100k miles.

Your dad's a mechanic, right? Then buying an older european car wouldn't be as bad of an idea as it would for others since repairs would be free, provided he had the requisite parts lying around. I say avoid little sports cars that will get you into trouble and go for the 735. It's still somewhat sporty, and is very safe for a car from that time.

<< 1978 Volkswagen Scirocco >>

You wouldn't happen to be selling one would you?

Go with a VW Golf TDI.

I think I would take the olds over the 190e. Isn't the 190e the ford escort of Mercedes? We had an old 280e and it was a great car except for the large amount of rust :) but it atleast had a 6 in it.

No...but I would buy one AFTER I get my Corrado G60. I love the MK1 Sciroccos:) Not as much as a Corrado though. I think I've gotten Urban to like the Corrado:)

i'm with nippyjun...my dad was saying, once you get a job, you should really start saving for a house and stuff like that...put money where you make money, a house will appreciate, cars only depreciate...

one of his colleagues is a young guy (about 27yrs old) and he was saying to my dad he wished he had started saving earlier for a down payment on a house or something...instead he splurged on a nice car and that car is now gone and he's kinda struggling to keep his rent paid and stuff...bay area housing is expensive :Q

as long as it has wheels and works, save your money...

Yep, you're still young, but it's never too late to save money. If you have a car that is in decent shape, keep it. If not, buy a used Corolla or Civic. These cars aren't sexy as a Mercedes or BMW, but they are very reliable. It's your money, you can buy any car you wish. But if you play it right, your money will still be there when you really need it.

SuperGroove,

My first car was a '77 Scirocco with an '83 GTI motor and 5 speed. I think I know where I can find an '80 or '81. I can't wait until my tax return gets here.
