I didn't even consider the R32, because I don't like hatchbacks.

But I took a look after seeing your post. Slightly worse mileage, 50 less HP. Still, the car is about $4000 cheaper. Then I saw the real deal breaker... R32 is automatic only?! WTF is VW thinking? I won't even consider buying a an automatic car.

DSG is not an automatic. It has an automatic setting...but there is no torque converter in there...just two good ol' clutches that don't require a clutch pedal. Try it before you crucify it.

OP, remember that fuel economy ratings were changed in the last year or two, and every car has significantly lower ratings than before. You can find your car's updated rating at fueleconomy.gov (IIRC). I can beat my car's updated highway rating even in combined driving.

Crapola. The ratings are a lot lower than what the stickers showed. Does this affect the gas guzzler tax now? For instance the Pontiac GTO was set at 18mpg city and 26mpg highway with the manual and you didn't have to pay the gas guzzler tax. Now if you bought the automatic that got 17mpg city and 26mpg highway you did have to pay the tax.
If I go buy a used car that gets under 18mpg with the new fuel economy rating, are they going to charge me the guzzler tax when I go to register? That is crap if they do.

I don't think you have to pay it when buying used. It's built into the sticker price on new cars.

As an example

I can get mine to do an easy 32 Mp Imperial g on the highway.

Stupid emissions :( We even get a second filter behind the air filter to stop emissions from leaking back out when off. If you pull it the ECU goes nuts . :|

I didn't mean unsuitable as a daily driver due to comfort, I should have been more clear. I think it's unsuitable as a daily driver *in my particular case* due to price being a bit out there combined with the likely insurance premium increases.

It would be a damn nice car though. Maybe I'll call my insurance company and figure out what the damage would be.

You'd be surprised at the insurance costs of a vette. if you are over 30 insuring one isn't expensive. Surprisingly more expensive cars are not more expensive to insure. A few years ago I saw the matrix that State Farm used to set base premiums and the vette was cheaper than a toyota Avalon.

Insurance on my 2002 Z06 is only $43/month with full coverage and a $500 deductible on a perfectly clean record. I'm a 22 year old single male and the insurance is all under my name, as is the car itself. I know a few here already called BS, but I don't really have a reason to lie about something like that. I was surprised too, but it's the truth. Your credit rating plays a huge part in your insurance rates. It makes absolutely no sense, but it's true.

Also, this is in central MN. Obviously the rates will vary in different areas, but cheap rates do exist on fast cars. Just have to do a little shopping.

A 1995-1999 Dodge Neon DOHC with manual transmission was rated 150 HP and 39 MPG highway, and owners regularly still get that and more.

When me an my wife got our 2001 Corvette we drove the Toyota Rav4 to get it. On the drive back, with both doing the same speed and milage, the corvette beat the 1999 Rav4 by a little over 1mpg. Yea its only a little over 1mpg but that is a 4cyl Toyota to a Auto Trans Corvette.

The 6 speed Corvette can get up to 30Mpg on the highway. We only drive ours in stop and go city traffic since moving to N.VA and still get in the 18-19 area, and it has the 4 speed auto.

GM a long time ago said they would not sell a massed production car that had a gas tax on it for bad milage. So the Corvette had to have all the tech/tricks to keep the milage up but still turn our greta power numbers, most underrated.

That 2.0L with the 5 speed was amazing, had it in my Avenger, the car would get 39mpg easy, and was so much fun to drive. The V6 auto was complete garbage.

Yeah the base Corvette and the Z06 are pretty amazing with the amount of power they have for such a low price and while getting pretty good gas mileage. Sure if you ape on it in the city, it will get a bit lower but still decent especially compared with other sports cars. I'd love to get one but it'd have to be a bit into the future and as a second or summer car. It's just a real good value.

And the cheap insurance isn't too surprising to me actually. It's weird but another case was someone on here, I think it was Insane3D, who was eyeing a Mazda 6, wanted the Mazdaspeed6 except was worried about the insurance, cept the 'Speed6 had cheaper insurance so I think he went with it.
