Man, you can apply Math to a ton of things. I know math majors who will be doing all kinds of stuff once they graduate. One is going into Finance, which is based heavily on mathematics. Some people say that math majors who then go on to study Finance specifically after college are better and a hotter commodity than those who study strictly finance on the undergraduate level. You learn to think logically with math and develop good reasoning skills, and I know a couple who got into good law schools because of that.
You can basically do anything that was mentioned by everyone else already. By no means do you have to teach.

Very good points.

I've always found it ridiculous that my school's Math department website said something like "Be a Math major. There will be a shortage of teachers in BC!"

100k from intel is far less than you would get as a senior Associate doing modelling for IB Options portfolios and all their other market making and trading work. YOu would have to have a look around, but you would probably have to be pretty damn good, andmaybe do a year of extra study in financial maths or computerised fin modelling, and enjoy the work. ;-). Also you could actually work as a market making trader if you didnt want to do the analysis and systems building.

You can trade derivatives on the stock market and make ludicrous amounts of money.

(I know someone doing this)

mathematician??

There's an Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics here at UCLA so maybe you can work for that place :p

That's what I chose for a major. And I have no regrets. I also asked the questions that you're asking. But there are answers: Don't major in B.A. Mathematics. Major in applied math (usually B.S. Mathematics) or statistics. Applied math obliges you to take many computer science courses, enough to obtain skills. Statistics opens up the door for you.

You'll obtain enough knowledge to get somewhere. If you know math, you can do almost anything in any fields. Also follow Jfur's suggestion.

Hope that helps!

Like the guys above said, CS is one of the things you can do. Then there're other fields you can get into like business and operations research. My friend with a degree in mathematics went to work for MS. Don't listen to people who tell you that a degree in math is worthless(or, for teachers).

i work as a research scientist for a pharmaceutical company (research and development), and my boss has a Ph.D. in mathematics. she initially came onboard as a statistician, but she picked up science fast enough to become a project leader. she makes 6 figures, plus bonuses. i majored in biology, btw.

was just browsing through some backups from old hard drives 15 years ago and found i had saved this thread!

just an update - i ended up majoring in math, and have been working in software engineering, mostly at startups!

Fifteen years? You're not retired yet? I hope you at least own a Rolex.

BTW, this has to be a candidate for the best 15+ year-old necro in ATOT history. Most relevant, anyway.
