new-
(2000) Honda Civic Si or SiR
Acura Integra GS-R or Type R
Honda Prelude
Toyota Celica GT-S (6 speed)
Hyundai Tiburon SE
Subaru WRX Impreza (A bit pricey)
VW GTI or Golf
Audi A4, I think these are actually quite affordable.. they're like Lexus (Toyota's high end), they're VW's high-end.

used-
Nissan 300ZX
Toyota Supra
Mazda RX7
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4
Toyota Celica All Trac Turbo
Toyota MR2

How can you tell that I like imports?

Get the Hyundai... Its by FAR the fastest one... so there is your manliness.. hell it can beat accords too. civics are a joke to it.

I'll agree with wyst. Tiburon's are way faster than Civics. And I even own a 2000 Civic. If I would have done more research when I bought my car last summer, I woulda got the Tiburon. For $2,000 more I coulda got leather, a sun roof, 40 more HP, etc...

do you want to attract babes and have a fine, reliable car???

C 😀 E 😀 L 😀 I 😀 C 😀 A!

Sell: Saturn SL-2

Give to sister: Ford Focus, KIA Sephia or Hyundai Elantra

Any of them will get you behind the wheel for 12-15k, but the Saturn will have considerably more resale potential after 2 years, and is the best by far in MPG. The Hyundai and Saturn are the quickest, the Focus and Saturn have the best brakes, the KIA will have the most appointments (because you can get it loaded for <$13k), and the Hyundai will have the most standard features. To get a decent Honda or Toy, you'll be pushing 19k and that's GTI and Mustang territory...

BTW, the TT is 31-39k 😉

MR2

🙂 In terms of cars, the MR2 was my first love. Ever since they came out with the most recent (it would be hard to say current) body design when I was in the 5th grade, I've envied those I saw driving it...the fact that it handles pretty good would also be a plus.

Downsides though: it's hard to find parts for it and difficult to do maintenance on the hard-to-reach engine.

So you guys really weren't joking when you said Hyundai? Wow

I honestly haven't even considered it. Might be worth looking into from the way you guys talk 😉

Etmann: about the TT, I really don't expect to see it anytime soon...it was a dream car at the beginning of this thread and when someone mentioned a comparably priced car, I meant to say that if I could afford that comparably priced car, then I would just get a TT

Jfur. As soon as the Celica came out, me and a bunch of friends saw it at the LA Auto Show and I immediately recommended to all of them to buy it. And 3 of them listened...

True, it would be cutesy for all of my friends to have the same car but looking all twinsy might get old 😉

I'd say get a Civic, but also look at the the Sentra GXE and SE, and the Protege. The Civic will probably have the best resale value but the Sentra is probably a technical equal in terms of reliability and durability. I don't know much about recent Mazdas but I've had two in the past. They were pretty good cars.

I have a 92 Civic. It's my 5th Honda, and my third Civic. I like them for what they are. No Civic bashing please, and don't judge me by my car. I don't blindly follow anyone or anything. I have mine because they're damn fine economy cars and my non riced 4 door is nearly invisible to cops. I don't wear my car as a fashion statement, I simply drive it. As long as my car is not ass ugly, I really don't give a flip how it looks. I got 39 MPG at 75-80 MPH on my last road trip with it. It was cheap. I don't care if someone bumps it when they park in front of it or behind it on the street. It's fun to drive (5 spd). It's dependable. I can make all sorts of upgrades for cheap. It's not a dream car but at least it's not some '87 Cavalier that barely runs.

"For all the people who say Civic, what do you think of the Del Sol? Seems like the same reliability but a little sportier...then again, a little too girly."

My buddy has a 95 del sol. I assume you know they arent made anymore. Nice car, especially if you have the 160hp engine. The top is fun to have off, but a bit of a pain because of the time it takes to change. There is little to no space for luggage, etc. impractical, but fun car.

my coworker just bought an elantra. Very nice car. Roomy, nice acceleration, and a good prie to boot.

I know you don't like Nissans, but the Sentra SE-R that will be coming out this fall deserves a look. Also, Ford will be putting out a Focus SVT hatchback for the 2002 model year.

However, if I were in your situation, I would get an Impreza WRX. By all accounts, the performance/price ratio of this car is virtually unmatched, and if you were thinking about an MR2 Spyder, the WRX is in about the same price range. It would be a good laugh for you if your friends tried to keep up with you in their Celicas. 😀

<< AmusedOne: I think if I were to get the turbo Jetta/Golf I'd just go for the TT...What are those priced at anyhow? >>

Under 20 grand. A TT will cost you a minimum of $32,000. You're really comparing cars from two entirely different classes and price ranges there.

I'd say you're in about the same situation as me. I'm looking at both the WRX and the Jetta. I really wanted the MR2 Spyder, but the insurance would kill me (22year old male in New Orleans), plus there's absolutely no storage space--and I mean NONE. I think I'm going to get a Jetta because I can get a fully loaded one for the same price as the WRX (although I'll miss the power & AWD 🙁) I'd suggest either the WRX or the Jetta. Both are nice, reliable, well priced cars.

BTW--

Um, did you look at the trunk? IMO, it's HUUUUGE for a car of that size. Plus, when you have the top in it, it fits in a frame that acts as a second trunk lid, so you can still use the trunk. Ingenious design.

Going from Focus to MR2 Spyder to TT, you talking a lot of differences there pricewise. The focus probably will fit your purpose nicely and cost much less than the other 2.
The Imprezza is an impressive car, probably the only Celica that can keep up with it is the GT-R with some TRD mods 🙂

WRX is very nice, especially in rally blue or yellow. I got an impreza 2.5RS, i'm happy w/ it, but the interior is kinda iffy w/ quality.

DaRockMan: You're right. Honestly though, the cost as depreciation of the car between my purchase and selling of it will be worth it to me.

No matter what kind of car I get, I'll for sure at least get the $6000 back when I sell it (probably quite a bit more) so I see the payments I'll have to make as more like "rent" on the car.

Also, that $6,000 is savings meant for the car on top of other savings/investments I have and I just got a full scholarship starting next year so I'm good right now in terms of finances. Truth be told, the 6 I have is pretty much all Ebay earnings for the past 6 months or so. 🙂

If you aren't going to use it much, then don't buy a new car. Once you get your car, your night driving will become more frequent and your day driving will certainly come up some more, so be sure to get something reliable. If you must get a new car, look for something with good gas mileage and that would fit into a compact spot. Since you live in northern cali and use the bart, you know how bad traffic is up there.

Okay, that's where I'm at. What should I do

Learn how to proof read then maybe you'll be ready to drive a car.

Are you talking about can again?

I recommend you get something you want...cause you will probably have it for awhile. Although I hate my brother's car I would recommend a Honda Accord or Civic. They seem to last long. (I personally hate the tight steering). Also, with the gas prices now, try and look at the mpg it gets. Just remember.......get what YOU want.

Of course I'm gonna get what I want. Still though, not knowihng what's out there might mea I want something I don'te ven know about yet.
