...febrese is basically distilled water.
... RedSquirrel.

OP, it's more about what you don't put in the trash can. I have a big bag of bags, plastic shopping bags, that I use for random things, but I also use them to put leftover cooked food or fruit peelings and stuff like that in. I usually keep a bag like that for a couple days before throwing it out but it doesn't stink cause you can tie up the ends a bit.

Absolutely NOTHING.

If NOTHING is what you put in your trash can...it will never smell like garbage again.

On a separate note, I'm glad we have trash collection twice a week. I don't know how people who only have it once a week deal with stanky-ass trash sitting aside their house for so long. You must hold your breath and pinch your nose when you put it in that huge receptacle. Maggots also come to mind because even I've had them.
With my wife and myself generating little waste, it's rare that the trash is taken to the curb more frequently than every two weeks. No smells escape the trash bags.

once-per-week trash collection is the norm in the united states.

twice a week seems excessive. you shouldn't be producing that much trash anyway. though from what i've heard it's more common in the south because of the hot weather.
