What can I do with this laptop

Hi guys,

Back in Aug '04 I bought my HP Pavilion ZD 7260 US to take with me to Iraq. It has served me well and been a great computer. I'm in the middle of a new desktop build and without even realizing it, my laptop is pretty outdated. It has a 3.2 P4, 512 Mb memory (PC 2700 I think), and a Go5700 w/ 64 Mb memory. The question is: Aside from adding more memory, what can I do to upgrade this thing? Since I have my new desktop on the way, I would like to use this as a mobile gaming machine, but I'm afraid the graphics are too outdated. Is there anything I can do?

Thanks for your replys,
Wanderica

You can contact HP and see if they have a mobo upgrade (for the integrated GPU), but that can get costly. It's likely that you're either going to have to put the laptop to rest (which is sad, because that's not really a bad laptop at all), or that you'll have to live with the 5700.

Your system is older but not slow. You can upgrade your ram to 1 gig and get a 7200rpm HD.

You might still try HP and a mobo upgrade. If its not too much, i would do it. A 6800 go or X700/800 is definitely worth it for gaming over that 5700.

If they can upgrade this out HP mobo, in addition, he has to get new DDR2 ram and new socket 775 CPU! At that price, he should just by a new laptop.

ok, I did some searching. It seems that I already have the mobo that offers the best graphics card for this model. It is possible and common to upgrade the processor, but you guys are right. The processor isn't exactly slow to begin with. My HDD is NOT the 7200 RPM version though, so that is deffinately worth looking into. Hitachi travelstar maybe? The RAM upgrade is a go as well. Anyway, that appears to be all I can do. Overall still a top notch computer though. Thanks for the input.

A 5400 RPM hard drive is a must. 7200 may be overkill. 1GB of memory is also highly reccomended.
One option for you might be to buy a "barebones" laptop. The Dell 9100 chassis supports a mobile 9800 (based on x800) and all of the stuff you already have. (I dislike the 9100 and own one myself; that said, there are very likely quite a few similar models.) I've seen barebones laptops with 6600GT's for under 800$; this would, in effect, give you a new laptop without replacing many of the components.

wow, that's a grat Idea. I wasn't even aware that barebones laptops were sold.

BTW, love the sig

Thanks! I thought it was funny, too.
Sager makes particularly good "barebones" laptops; Clevo is supposed to be pretty good, too.
