Use credit card and paypal. If you aren't satisfied, have the credit card charge back.

Tell him to get verified before you send payment? Only pay with PayPal, and source it with a credit card.

guy hasn't even had any feedback as a buyer.

item he is selling seems to be in good condition and because he doesn't have any feedback the price is depressed a bit.

unfortunately the only payment options are paypal and personal check.
