because cable companies and etc ... want to profit from it ... limit speed / access to resources ...
politicians want to control it - limit access to what they do not want online ...

I've traveled much and so many places have limited internet

we do not want to wake up one day and for it to be like that

if you are not informed see

BUT my question is when I wake up I ask my self - how have I contributed yesterday to the environment (besides going to the toilet 😛 ) and what can I do today .... I make changes ... re-use ... re-cycle ... save ...

not I also want to ask the same question about the internet - what have I done to defend what can be take away from us so quickly and easily ...

please advise ... thank you ...

There are people working on meshnets, unfortunately to do it right (with fibre) would cost a LOT of money for individuals to be able to do it.

Here's one project that has a few local meshes going though: http://www.projectmeshnet.org

In general though we really are at the mercy of this corrupt capitalist world unfortunately. Not to mention all the laws and regulations about even being able to start an ISP. Government's don't seem to want any competition here, probably because if everybody could run their own cable plant it would be a mess. So there is 1 cable company, 1 phone company in a given city, and that's it. Maybe a few small ones that piggy back on the existing aging cable plant. Not just anyone can do it, even if they have the money. Even a meshnet, I imagine it is very hard to even get the proper permits/permission to run fibre everywhere especially if they realize that this network is bypassing all the NSA stuff. The NSA has it easy right now because there are only a few choke points for the entire internet and most of them are in the US. they don't want that to change.

We remember dial up at 28.8K.
Now we dial up @ 250mbps.
In this area of the world the profit system works fairly well.
In the areas you're from, it sounds like it doesn't.
Don't bring your warped mind set here.
I advise you to troll away.

Aside from hardware hacking the squirrel mentioned, don't subscribe to silos. Use only open communication standards. If here isn't a libre implementation that you can host yourself(whether you want to or not), refuse to use it.

I'm actually watching the Aaron Swartz documentary now, I forgot about it and had wanted to see it.

It is infuriating just how corrupt the system really is. He's the type of person who should be running in politics but instead they shut him down and criminalize his actions, and eventually drove to him to suicide. Really sad. Most people just sit down and accept the current laws and way things work, instead of realizing just absurd and ridiculous a lot of it is but he stood up and tried to challenge it despite the odds. I wish I had even 10% of the drive he had to try to make things better.

it's very sad to see messages like this

this is why one day we wake up and lose what we have had

wake up fat - stuffed with sugar - look around
sick - look around ... pharma ...

btw ... South Korea, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Japan, Nethereland, Sweede, Latvia, Ireland, CR, Romania ..... and on and on are all faster in speed then US see https://www.google.com/search?q=countries+speed&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X#imgrc=3PX1VIrA1U13LM:

That's not it at all; the financials simply don't work for just internet access. Verizon and Google found out the hard way. Even Big Cable is not immune; they are going under eventually.

What can YOU do?

Abso-fucking-lutely nothing.

Congresscritters will pass the laws their benefactors pay them to pass. What's best for us never enters the conversation...
