What can I do to increase my reading speed?

I can go through a normal page in maybe 45 seconds, 60 or more if it's a technical book.

Are there any good ways to increase my reading speed?

It's fine. I'm just bored and I saw someone say that they can read a page of a book in like 24 seconds. I'd love to be able to do that. I have the free time and the books to learn to speed read, I just need to know how.

Just push yourself a bit...Consistently.


All that speed reading stuff they is BS if it promises wonders...QUICKLY. Basically they make you skip lines. I don't know about you, but I need to KNOW what I am reading, and if it is a great piece piece of literature, skiming it is only doing a diservice to all applicable parties, especially myself..

my dad let me borrow a "speed reading" book, i forget by who

it tells you to use your fingers (starting with one then using 3 or 4 or something) to guide your eyes faster along the lines, once you get used to the speed the comprehension isnt a problem. i usually would read 450 or so wpm and once i got used to using my fingers i could do 800 or 900 (i forget, been a while since i measured it) with about the same comprehension.

i dont use my fingers much to read...because most of my reading is on the net, i dont read books as much as i used to.

i didnt mess with that book much though, it got into some "techniques" that were a pain in the ass, though they claimed to be able to eventually get you to read an entire page in little more than a glance, im far too lazy to bother with it. moving your fingers over every other line, then in waves and something something...i tried it a bit, but couldnt gather anything i read, bah to that. using the fingers can help a bit though once you get used to moving them a bit faster than you normally read
 
I've heard of that finger moving thing before too. Another way to increase your speed (i've heard, and don't do it) is to look at the word as a whole, rather than its individual letters. No clue if that works though.
 
i read a speed reading book once and it was telling me to like skip everyother word and to look for important words... i thought it was complete bs...
 
I'm fortunate to be a very fast reader but I never really worked at it.

From what I can gather by comparing notes with people on how they read, one big difference is that when I read, I look at groups of words, not one word at a time. For example, this is how I saw the first line of your original post

Move your eyes only a couple of times per line if you can. If you can force yourself to read faster, or take in groups of words, your comprehension will keep up.

thats actually the way youre supposed to be reading

hnce all teh potss a wihle bcak that talked about how you still know what word is what when you look at it, even if its misspelled, as long as the first and last letters are in place

i took it that you were supposed to be reading words instead of letters in say....i dont know, 2nd grade? 3rd? i sure as hell didnt spend long reading by the letter, and i dont usually read one word at a time either.
