Excercise is more important than anything. It can literally take a couple of decades off your age as you get older (in appearance. Less so in reality, but it can extend your life by a solid decade, and quality of life immeasurably more).

Start learning the words all the kids are using... like "dope" and "fresh" and "wiggity-whack"
Also, start rollerblading with light weights.

Replace all your beverages with Green Tea (as hot or ice tea).

Stop eating anything with bleached wheat flour. You might be surprised how hard that is. Eat brown and wild rice instead of white rice.

Take a Vitamin C supplement. Start with 500mg a day, work up to 1g a day, and try to get to at least 2g a day as long as it doesn't make your stool too soft.

When eating salads, replace iceburg with darker greens. Replace all oils with Extra Virgin Olive Oil. When eating potatoes, eat Red Skin Potatoes. When cooking vegetables, use something like Royal Prestige cookwear so the veggies are steamed rapidly with little nutritional loss.

Get at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity a day. This can be accumulative, and not necessarily "excercising". Spend about 5 minutes per morning doing stretches.

If you have any mercury amalgams, get them removed and replace them with resin.

Don't spend long times in the sun. But get enough sunlight per day. Try to tan naturally - it has been discovered that long time in the sun + sun lotion actually increases cancer risk because your body is still getting irradiated, just not burnt.

Good post.

These are the only two things I disagree with/question.

You shouldn't have to take any vitamin C if you're eating a balanced diet. Further, the Vitamin C found in natural foods is much better than any synthetic Vitamin C. Why would you take so much(in addition to your diet)?? I highly doubt that is good for you. It is a waste, anything your body can't use it will just eliminate. You could easily get 500 - 800mg of Vitamin C in your diet with the right additions.

The thing about sunscreen doesen't make any sense. The point of sunblock is to, well, block UVA and UVB rays.

I agree with the general sentiment of the advice though, because most people aren't going to slather themselves in sunscreen if they're going to be in the sun for 10 minutes, but throughout your lifetime, those 10 minute episodes add up.

That's highly debatable. For one, just because somebody gets RDA doesn't mean that they are getting the ideal amount of a vitamin (RDA I believe is a number used to ward off disease, not give somebody ideal health). In regards to your 500-800, well yeah that's a great amount, but insanely difficult to get for most people without a pill. Sure, if I had a balanced diet I wouldn't need to supplement, but I don't have a balanced diet. Nobody I know has one (not a single bloody person in my life has a balanced diet, honestly!), so the next best thing is supplementation. It's not as good, but it's better than nothing.

Limit your intake of red meats.

Avoid high cholesterol foods (check the nutritional information on packages - I was really surprised to find out which foods had high cholesterol (yogurt) and which had none (potato chips)).

Exercise.

Avoid getting sunburned (or even tanned). However, from what I have read a moderated amount of sun exposure is good for you.

Drink a small glass of red wine each evening.

We're one of the few animals that can't generate our own Vitamin C, and the nurtional value of our food supply has gotten so poor that supplementation is the most efficient way to consume the most. There are natural C supplements that have a combination of various C's - usually with rosehips added and bioflavanoids.

Good Vitamin C info

I found this out while listening to Dr. Dead Edell a few weeks ago. From a recent study. AFAIK, the SPF of a sunblock refers to UVB, although it may say full spectrum which includes UVA - there is no regulation for how strong it is. So you can be getting good protection from UVB for 4 hours, while the UVA protection is weak and cooking your insides - but without your skin burning you'd never know.

Sunlight UVA is bad

Although it appears that too little sun is also harmful, which is why I said to still get enough:

Sun is good

Yeah, I completely agree.

If you aren't getting enough in your diet, then you need to suppliment. The USDRA for VC is only 60mg, which is a joke.

You could get 500mg of Vitamin C from 1/2 a Rosehip. :p Incorporate it into your tea, they are good.

Yellow Kiwi has 120 - 180mg/fruit. Jujube fruit has up to 500mg/fruit. Tropical Guava is an exceptional source of VC, with ~165mg/serving.

That is just fruit. There are plenty of vegetables with respectable ammounts of VC, too.

Broccoli contains over 120mg/serving. Bell peppers, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage greens are also good.

I've been told not to eat too much fruit as they contain high sugar content, is this true?

I love fruit, and wouldn't mind replacing red meat with fruit :(

:disgust:

NO.

Eat as much fruit as you want. Eat fruit all day, every day.

Unless you're a weight lifter, or trying to lose a lot of weight and have to follow a strict diet, natural fructose is eleventy billion times better than nutritionally stripped, processed table sugar..

Edit: WTF? That "disgusted" face doesen't look very disgusted.

It looks more like it's rolling its eyes.

BAN emoticon changes.

I can't agree with this statement. The dietician fear-mongering doctors started that trend... Cholesterol is good for you and so is saturated fat, in moderation. Your body needs it for the rigidity of cell membranes and other connective tissues. The amount of cholesterol in your diet actually has nothing to do with the cholesterol levels in your blood stream. Eggs for example are high in cholesterol, but eating a ton of them doesn't increase your cholesterol because your digestive system breaks it down.

"Bad" cholesterol actually is generated by your own liver!

It's not that the high sugar is so bad for you, as it can be a waste of calories. Vegetables are generally superior to fruit. Less calories, and lots of minerals/vitamins.
good post, but the one about the fillings...explain! ouch!
Some people report that the mercury from these can seep into one's blood and cause issues. It's hard, as with anything, to say how serious this issue is. I think most dentists are not recommending removing all mercury fillings and replacing them. At the same time I think few dentists are still giving mercury fillings. I've still got one or two, but they're being replaced (since they are falling apart, and I'm having to get refilled - my mouth is almost entirely white now as opposed to metallic that it used to be :).
