What can be the problem!?

Athlon XP 1700+
Epox 8RDA+
512MB PC3200
Radeon 9700
80GB WD Caviar SE
350watt Raidmax (POS)

Ok, so this system has been running rock solid OC'd to 2.2 GHZ for over 2 years now.

Just recently I started having major problems with it.

50% of the time it fails to boot. It just hangs after the POST.

I get random reboots, random hard locks.

There is absolutely ZERO OC headroom now.

I can open the A: drive and look inside, but the computer hard locks when trying to transfer a file in either direction.

All of this happens with the comp at stock speeds.

The PSU has been making a weird screeching noise, so I'm guessing the PSU is about to take a dump, but some of these symptoms don't seem to be PSU related, well they could be, but I dunno. Such as the hard lock when transfering a file to or from a floppy.

Is it for sure PSU or could it be the hard drive? What else could cause such catastrophic instability?

I'm just fishin for ideas here cause I don;t have an extra PSU to throw into it.

Thanks

too much OC can make the CPU behave funny after a certain amount of time
people that OCed the 1700+ to 2500/3200+ speeds at 1.7+ volts reported a lifespan of only 6-9 months with their cpu's
that's some people, not all people

but then again - if it only hard locks when transferring files it may not be the cpu
I also recall that epox had a spell where they had exploding caps on their mobo's -- but since your mobo has performed fine for 2 years I dont know if its going to be that either

My 2500+ has been at 1.7V since July of 2003. Aside from being a dud overclocker, it's still going stable. :)

Honestly the problem you refer to sound almost PSU issue for all of them. If you hear a screaching sound that didn't exist earlier I would recommened exchanging that no matter what and if it still doesn't take care of the problems work from their.

Step 1. Get new PSU
Step 3. Profit

sorry, I meant 1.9v+ ... forgot that stock is 1.55v
anyways my point is that too much overclock can affect your system if funny ways
