What can be done with an outdoor dog during the winter?

I'm visiting my parents and our dog's going pretty crazy out there...it's raining and cold and he's just banging on the door trying to convince us to let him in.

Now, our house isn't really the type that a dog would work in so we've never let any of our pets stay inside the house...

Anyhow, while he's outside, is there anything that can be done for him? I've read about getting him an elevated house with a flap over the door, giving him more food, and putting a sweater on him...

Anything else that you guys found really helps?

<< Garage? >>

I thought about this and I'm trying to figure out a way to make this work...We've got a pretty big garage but it's loaded with all sorts of stuff so he'd have very little space to move around...also, he'd crap in places I'd prefer there to be no crap

Well, our dogs are medium sized-20-26" high and about 30 pounds. They aren't outdoor dogs but we occasionally make em sleep outside, especially when gone. What my mother did a few years ago was go out and buy a dog house, perhaps 3 feet tall, 3 feet long, with a shingled roof. She put it on concrete blocks, and put a plastic flap over the entrace to keep the wind out. In addition, we mounted a 300 watt floodlight w/fixture inside the doghouse, so even when its cold as hell outside, the doghouse keeps pretty warm.

works pretty well as far as I can see, but its a pain in the ass changing the bulb. I used to be able to climb inside when i was like 13 to change it, but now we have to use of those extendable rods with a suction cup on the end that you twist the bulb on/off with. Works like a charm. 🙂

Thats about all you can do. We have a basement, but if we didnt, the pooch would be in the dog house.

Alright, I'll go out tomorrow when the stores open and grab a flap for the door and something to elevate the house a little...for now, I gave him a couple turkey legs and wrapped him up in a big, old towel... 🙂
