What can be causing this problem?

I have an A7V, T'bird 800 at 900, Geforce MX, 320 MB Crucial PC133, running WinME. I have the latest Promise bios and drivers, as well as all other drivers. I am running in Normal and not Optimal mode.

Everything seems to work perfectly except for the fact that my Windows Updates will not start the actual copying of the files to my hard drive after they are downloaded and when I try and start the VIA 4.28 install, it just hangs and will not install the files. I am forced to end the task every time.

I am not sure about the status of the VIA drivers if I ever got them installed or not. How can I tell if they are, and what can I do to get the drivers installed?

maybe you have a bad network card that corrupts the files as you are downloading them?

I Don't think it is that, but I will try and check them. Everything else I download works fine, except for this problem. I don't know if it is related to the latest Promise drivers or what, but if it snows as much as it is supposed to, I guess I will have more time to figure it out.

Just to assure yourself, check your IRQ's. I have had my 1GHz/A7V/256MB/ATA-100 system for six weeks now, and last night was the first night it has ever survived being on for 24 hours without a single crash.

Here's my card arrangement:

AGP: GeForce Asus V6800
PCI1: empty
PCI2: empty
PCI3: NIC
PCI4: SB Live!
PCI5: empty

This is the most stable arrangement of cards for me. Placing the SB Live! in PCI3 like a lot of people have suggested on this board assigned it to IRQ10, which placed it in direct conflict with the Promise ATA-100 controller. Computer wouldn't make it past the initial system information page while booting.

With the above configuration, the autoassigning of IRQ's by my Win98 was putting the NIC, Sound Card, USB bus, and GeForce card all on IRQ 11. I deactivated my 2nd serial port and opened up IRQ 3, and with that, the NIC and SB Live have moved to IRQ 3. My system has never been more stable!

I don't know if this will help, but give it a shot. I've done EVERYTHING to try and get some stability, and this finally worked.
