What cable wired router to buy for cheap?

That d-link unit is a pos so stay away from it. I had one after lightning took out my linksys wrt54gx router and it would barely handle one pc much less a network. I ended up with a d-link dgl-4500 but for your price range I'd go read some reviews first to see which one best suites your needs. Also stay away from the linksys rvs-4000, it's another pos and I got one right after I returned the 2310. If I were you I'd look for something with gigabit ports on it. The speed difference on a lan is huge. The other day I was moving 7.7gb of data across my lan to two machines. The one with a gigabit nic took it in just over 9 minutes. The other one at 100mbps took over 3 hours to get it.

The Netgear is Not a Router.

The D-Link is, but compare it to this.

About the same price, but it has Wireless that you do not have to use until you need it.

In general, Wired Routers cost the same as wireless. In most cases they are old units since there is No new designs (for years) in the Wire aspects of the Routers.

what's the difference between a switch and a router?

The content of the following links will provide you with a basic tutorial about Sharing Internet connection; it is short and to the point.

The first two pages were written by me ages ago. Ignore the prices, and the specific choice of hardware, stick with the principles they are still the same.

Basic Options for Internet Connection Sharing - http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.aspx?i=105

Hubs, routers, switches, DSL, LANs, WANs...? - http://www.anandtech.com/guides/viewfaq.aspx?i=48

The whole thing should look like this - http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg
