I just received notice via e-mail from AnandTech that one of the primary things that brought me here in the first place has now been re-established. :)

Buyer's Guide(s)

Let's hope it has a similar effect on others. :Q

Wow that is cool. Does that get e-mailed to you? Or do you just go the site?

You know I can't seem to find it. Maybe they haven't even listed it yet. :Q

But you can subscribe to the newsletter here: AnandTech News Letter

Actually, what brought me to Team Anandtech had almost nothing to do with the main Anandtech site. :Q Honestly, aside from the Forums being hosted by Anandtech, what attracted me to this Team was the people and their willingness to help a complete newbie, even though he wasn't on their Team.. yet. ;)

People here helped me with getting SETI setup and running with the CLI (as opposed to the GUI that I had been using) and later helped me with getting RC5 running too. Obviously, their efforts paid off for both the TeAm and myself. I have quite a few friends here now that I probably never would have met otherwise, so thanks to all of you for being helpful! :)

I remember I was originally drawn to the Anandtech website by a search for something like "motherboard review" or something. I found the site easy to navigate and the reviews excellent. I've been here ever since. Of course, back in the UBB days we (as members) went through a bunch of forum reloads and resets. ;) Glad the forums are stable now and glad to still be here!

I've been a regular AnandTech reader since mid-2000.

I've joined the Forums late last year when my connection was upgraded from 56.5 to Cable ;)

I regularly read articles on the main page since mid 2000. Then at the end of 2000 I saw the article on Team Anandtech and I immediately wanted to join. However, my lazyness prevented me from joining until March 2001.

I was told about the site (anandtech.com) when myself and a friend were helping with a site set up which we hoped to make a hardware review/help site, called Broken Windows (hence where the BW came from on my name). I stumbled onto the forums and posted a few messages, then sorta forgot about it til i came to build my PC.

Then, back in Dec 99 i found Seti again once i built my PC (Abit KT7, Duron 700, GF2MX) and remembered that i ran Seti before on my 233, so i started Seti up again on the GUI, then popped into the forum here and the rest is history! i joined the team and set up the CLI, and have been here fully since about February or April last year and enjoyin the fun!

Thanks for the link Smoke, have signed up to the News Letter :)

If I remeber right Tom's Hardware had a link in a story to Anand Tech and thats how I found the place

I noticed the forums much later and became a great help getting some of my systems set up. Seti was a combo of the forums
and a tech thing I saw on TV.

BTW the forums have got me started on my next project, a crack rack for seti!! taking the info found here I have come up with the following

ECS K7SEM266 $55 shipped
Athlon XP-1600 $66 shipped
PC133 64meg $11 shipped
300w power supply $15 shipped
Floppy $5
CPU fan $10

Floppy version of seti from this site

Linux floppy install

For a grand total of $162 and should be good for a work unit every 4 to 4.5 hrs. Now to convice the wife I need 10 in the basement :D

Wow, I knew Anandtech because my bro. told me too! Then I was addicted to Hot Deals for a year then suddenly quit lurking at all forums all together. I rediscover the forums about 14 months ago then got drawn into DC by the last competition with BBR (then DSLR).

Holy cow.... my bother told me too! :Q:Q:D

What have our brothers done to us? (btw, I have almost twice as many posts as he does....)

He told me about the FS/FT forum

Then I got poor ( ;) )

Then I got spammed by dennilfloss ;)

Then I joined the RC5 borg miniteam

Then I escaped from the Borg and started SETI on my own.

My goal is to pass TA Cube in Seti@home... :):p

My story is the same as some of the others. I wanted to build my 1st PC, so I was researching the Net looking for good information on the best motherboards, CPUs, etc., when Anandtech came up in a search. There were good articles, most by Anand himself, usually posted at 2am, along with mention of what he was doing that day (school, practice, movies, etc.) and found the hardware forums had some good information. This was in the old UBB days, and I was on dial-up.

For awhile I read the articles, hubg out a bit in Off Topic. Got tired of the roving gang of flamers, started checking out the other Anandtech forums. Popped in here, saw the respect teammates had for each other, the way they went out of their way to help each other, were quick to apologize if there was a misunderstanding, and saw how much fun people were having.

Started running RC5 on my 486DX-66mhz while I was buying parts to build the PC (ABIT BH6, Cely 300a), and I've been here ever since. :D

I forget there are other forums here, as I just have a direct link to DC in my favorites. :D

I'm afraid my story is rather typical as well. Building my first PC back in January 2000 I needed advice on voltages etc. I stumbled across this place and never looked back ;)

I then got talked into joining RC5 by Adul and his crew, but I soon realised that SETI was more worthy so I switched over :)

I began by reading the AnandTech website for the hardware reviews. Later I joined the Forums, but didn't really pay attention to the DC forum for the first few weeks. It was about this time that Windows 2000 was going through its Release Candidate stages, such as Win2000 RC2, and I kept seeing this "RC5 Team" link on the upper-left side of AnandTech.com.

RC5? But they're not up to Release Candidate 5 yet... I kept saying in the back of my mind. Finally I clicked on it, thinking it had to do with Windows2000 Release Candidates, but noooo... it was a trap! :Q I was only able to put up a brief struggle before the cows subdued me and took over my PC. :D

From that page, I came to the DC forum to ask a couple of questions, such as "Can I play games while the client runs?" and found, like most of us have, that the people around here are first-class, although there were times when tensions flared up too.

Edit: haha, I want to add that, at the time, AnandTech was running banner ads for the Team right in the articles. "Join Team AnandTech and you could win $1000!" they proclaimed. "Hah, I'm not falling for that!" was my attitude.

A trap! lol :D

I started to read Anands site sometime in early 99 ,after a link from Tomshardware which I've been reading since late 98.I noticed the community links but never had the time to check it out

After finally getting on the net on my own PC in Aug 99 I roamed the forums of Sharkeys & Toms site for a few months, but I fairly rapidly got fedup with the childish flame wars that happened there all the time.
In the meantime whilst I had heard of SETI from BBC's Tomorrows World (sometime in May 99,I remember thinking, wow I gotta run that!:D) & also from the Star Trek site,by the time I was on the net I'd forgotten about it! ,until I stumbled across a single thread in Sharkeys forum talking about it ,seconds latter I was downloading it;)(started Oct 16th 99).I quickly found that there was rarely any discussion there about SETI :( ,though I did learn the 'blank screen' trick there.
Searching Toms forums turned up similarly low levels of discussion:( ,then I remembered I hadn't checked out Anands forums yet.

I popped on over & not only did I find a dedicated section to DC but it also listed SETI!:D,there was then a great deal of SETI threads ,as is now ,(though it was out numbered by RC5 then) I also found the friendlyness & very few arguments appealing:)I joined TA on Nov 5th 99 ,I still have the daily stats thread by HB where I was welcomed:) ,I never looked back after that & I rarely visit Toms & Sharkeys forum nower days.I do visit OverclockersUK,Team Pheonix Rising,Matrox Users,Team Picard & DLSR forums from time to time though;)

Finally a comment about the "article". :D

For just about $10 more I'd go with the 1800+ XP. That would give you a couple of WUs @ day extra which is about as good a bang for the buck that you'd find nowadays. :)

I have really enjoyed reading about how each person found their way here. mechBgon's comment about the front page link promoting RC5 makes me wish, once again, that DC still had that kind of support here. The current recruiting thread in a few of the other forums are helping out a lot ... they should be a permanent fixture. :)

I loved those buyer's guides! Glad they're back. :)

I had been reading the Anandtech site for reviews and what-not for two years before I even knew there was an Anandtech forum. I discovered the forums while I was looking for information about VCRAM and couldn't find any reviews or test reports anywhere. I happened to notice the forums link on the Anandtech page and saw all the different technical groups and signed up just to post my question in General Hardware. This was in April, 2001. I ventured into Off Topic out of curiosity and quickly learned that was no place to wander around alone in without an asbestos suit, especially if the words "Junior Member" appear under your avatar.

I lurked in DC for a while and the person who was the most conspicuous was some dude named RaySun2Be (that's a funny name ;)) running around and causing general havoc all over the place. :) What impressed me the most was how helpful and kind everyone here was as opposed to the flame throwing crowd in OT and even some of the tech forums. RC5 was still king of DC then, but there were quite a few Seti posts and I had been a Seti "free agent" for two years. So, I decided it was time to settle down. I built a humble little cabin near Plum Creek in Walnut Grove with my wife and three daughters. I had a couple of oxen and figured I'd raise some crops and try my hand at farming...

No... wait a minute... That was Little House on the Prairie...

So, I decided to join TA-Seti on May 16th, 2001 with my 5100 workunits and Assimilator1 immediately challenged me to a SETI race. Artemedes was doing the race stats then but was trying to find somebody to take over for him. I volunteered to take over and y'all have been steppin' in my BS ever since. :)

anandtech was one of the hardware sites i regularly visit and about a week ago i saw this link saying somehing about a "shameless recruitment article" and lo and behold, i read something about the TeAm. i've heard of the seti@home project before and i did think about getting it myself but i never pushed thru with it. i guess it was the article that prompted me to get off my lazy @$$ and get it :). now the spare cycles of this aging p3 450 i use are being diverted to a greater cause :)

I found Anandtech from a link on msi's site when I researching one of their mbs and found the forums from there. Spend most of my time in the for sale/trade and hot deals forums Then saw the recruiting threads back in January. Had been doing seti since 99 with another email account and joined the team with the account I have now.:)
