What brands are good for DVD-R media?

I'm about to order the NEC2500A from newegg and I will need some DVD's to go with it. Are there any good brands in particular? Also, should I order it off of newegg with the burner or can I get it cheaper at retail stores. Thanks

There is no "standard" media. Both the + and the - perform about the same and are ususlly the same price.
What determines what you should buy is your dvd player.
Most of the newer ones play either + or - . I usually like the Ritek 4x from newegg, but I did get an order to shop4tech.com today for $64.80 for 100 ritek 4x media.

I don't konw if you already knew this but it depends on your burner too. I'd suggest Ritek as an all around brand. I'd stay away from CMC media (I think that is the name of the media company). CMC often makes media for Memorex. Their media I got from Office Depot is crap.

the standard media is DVD+R correct?

Well, the DVD Forum (which owns the DVD trademark and is responsible for setting the standard for the DVD movies you watch and the DVD-ROMs that some games and apps come on) officially supports the DVD-R format. The +R format is supported by the +RW Alliance, which is a group of companies that didn't feel like paying royalties to the DVD Forum anymore so they developed a DVD? compatible format to release on their own. <opinion>This created a split in the customer pool which IMO has quite frankly held back the adoption and development and kept high the prices of recordable DVD media/drives on both the DVD-R and +R sides. In short they have done a great disservice to us all (whichever format you follow) with their greed.</opinion>

So to sum up, since the DVD Forum owns the DVD trademark and they own the DVD-Video standard, then it would be correct to say that the DVD? standard is DVD-R.

The term DVD is NOT trademarked and there is per definition no standard.
On the contrary the format war has most likely resulted in a faster development and lower prices than if it had not existed, we have (soon) DL DVDs, 16x SL DVDs and $0.30 cheap (crap) media.
So to sum up your wrong.
