Mostly want them to work in a stand alone DVD player and portable DVD player.

As long as you stick with the reputable brands, you'll probably be OK. Granted, for best compatibility, DVD+R and a drive with the bitsetting feature is recommended since you can finalize the disc as DVD-ROM.

What is this bitsetting feature you speak of? I already used DVD+Rs but I've never heard of that feature.

cdfreaks.com. Bitsetting is a feature on some DVD writers (NEC 3520A) which changes the booktype of a DVD+R format disc to DVD-ROM for maximum compatibility.

It's referred to by several different terms, but Bitsetting is the most common. Only DVD+R media supports this feature and not every +R burner can do it. Basically, you are tricking the burned disc to think it's DVD-ROM media (same as any retail game or movie you'd buy).

Taiyo Yuden is supposed to be really good. I just bought 100 TY 8x discs for $32.

Why? You could have gotten 100 Ritek 16x +Rs for $3 more shipped and taxed.

Edit: AR though

It's more the burner than the media, in my experience.
My Sony DRU510 couldn't handle anything but Sony media until they put out a firmware update.
I can use any old cheap media with my DRU710A and never have a problem. I've been using Staples Teon 40 packs and most recently Staples own branded stuff. Not a coaster in the last couple hundred discs.
I loan my backups to family and have only had one complaint about compatibility with a dvd player. That was my sisterinlaw who has a 5 year old Shimano-Shinkoshia-Daiwoo Super Generic DVD player, and it was only with one movie.
I have a new Sony SLV-D300P DVD/VCR and all my backups work fine in it.

I might be an idiot, but I thought EVERY retail DVD (be it a game or a movie) is essentially in the DVD-ROM format.

The issues will gradually appear down the road for cheap media. Cheap media have a short life span and data written on it will corrupt much faster than quality media. But of course, YMMV.
