What brand of button down shirt do you wear, and why?

Who has good styles but is relatively cheap?

Are short sleeve button downs the same as a long sleeve button down but sleeves rolled up (for summer)?

Recently I've been enjoying dressing nicely very much, and am looking to expand my wardrobe for the summer.

============
edit!

Maybe I should just forget the dress shirts for this summer; am travelling to Europe for study abroad and we'll be visiting about 13 different cities while we take classes.

Khaki shorts and rolled up sleeves? Every frat boy on campus wears khaki shorts though.

In the last week of dressing nicely I've noticed the huge effect style + confidence + being in shape has on the ladies. Just looking for a way to take this with me to Europe while not burning up/sweating like crazy.

Do not wear short sleeve button downs. They are button downs with only the t-shirt length sleeve. If it really is that hot, roll up the sleeves on a normal dress shirt.

I usually hit up the outlets, TJ Maxx, and other discount clothing stores for button downs. I'll wear most any brand as long as it's affordable and looks nice.

I don't know if you guys have it in the US, but over here, Zara has some nice designs in an affordable price range.
There's also Mexx, and Espirit that are nice.

Whatever's cheap. I have extremely wide shoulder bones for my frame so I have to get all my shirts tailored. It's a royal pain in the ass.

edit: As far as comfort and quality goes I DO like Kenneth Cole's shit. I have a couple Ralph Lauren Purple pieces and they're all comfortable as hell. I'm not particularly 'stylish' so I just buy normal colors and plain clothes and make sure everything stays clean.

Varies a lot. If you go to dept stores, you can get good prices on generic brands (Stafford, Van Heuson, Joseph Abboud etc). If you go to specific places liek Banana Republic, it'll cost a bit more. If you wanna be a baller , you could always go to Brooks Brothers

I usually wear these too . . . I have a few kenneth cole, a few calvin klein a few other things . . . but MOST of my "dress shirts" are from Express. They fit well, and are cheap when you buy em on sale. I just got 2 new ones yesterday for 19.99 a piece. I think it's a good deal. Some people think they wear out real quick, but if you wash them according to the label, they seem to last ok to me.

TJ max dude. If you have good taste you can really score some nice stuff there. Depends sometime rolling up ur sleeves isn't so professional, but sometimes it's stylish.
Dress nice does add a flavor to the day for sure :)

I don't need them often so I've only got 4 long sleeve button downs right now - 2 Stafford, 1 Van Heusen, 1 J Ferrar, all 4 bought at the local Sears.

I usually wear Perry Ellis, or Claiborne. I like their styles and fit, and I can usually find them for ~$25-30.

Not really a big fan of Tommy Hilfiger or Nautica, the fabric they use is really heavy...

I'm kind of a sucker for long-sleeve button-down shirts, I have like 30 or so...

and short sleeve shirts are ok, but some make you look really old, and only really good for casual stuff... something about the long sleeve shirts makes them more stylish IMO.

"Button down" refers to a style of collar, not the shirt itself. Specifically, it refers to the less formal collar style that uses small buttons to hold down the points. The shirt itself is simply called a dress shirt.

I tend to prefer either Kenneth Cole, Geoffrey Beene, or Van Heusen. In my experience, Kenneth Cole shirts tend to wear out faster than Geoffrey Beene or Van Heusen shirts though.

At 20-25, it doesn't matter much. I think its fabric holds up fine, the dye just kind of fades a bit. I get mainly white ones not worry about color fade. The other colors tend to fade a bit around the collar a bit, but I just get new ones and donate the old ones to the local shelter/salvationarmy/etc.

brooks brothers non-iron. best shirts ive ever owned. refuses to wrinkle. by no mean cheap at 3 for 200$ but the careless maintenance is more than worth it.

ive thrown away far too many 1mx shirts because they get stained one way or another its not economic to buy cheap shirts

Costco actually sells a pretty good button down shirt under their "Kirkland" brand. Nice long staple cotton, about $15, but only color they have is white though.

Personally, for dress shirts I'll get whatever brand is on the clearance rack while being good quality, and generally won't bother unless it's under $20. If I didn't wear dress clothes to work every day I might splurge for some more expensive items (since they'd get less use), but I'd rather have more money to spend on items which have a bigger bang for the buck ratio like high-quality, comfortable dress shoes.

(Thankfully) I don't have to wear button-downs on a regular basis anymore. They were expected when I was a business agent for my union, but those days are long gone.

The best button-down I have, out of a dozen or so, is one from Costco..Kirkland brand. NICE fabric, well made, actually fits me properly.

I don't wear anything with polyester in it, not even a blend. My clothing has to be 100% cotton or wool. (I do have one pair of wool-blend slacks that I hate to wear)

I used to have some great vintage rayon Aloha shirts...worth BIG bux in recent years, but that's material for a different thread...
