I got a Marin Novato last year. It's been a great bike, the paint matched fenders are really sweet and unique. I'd also recommend Kona. Maybe you could find a Kona Smoke near your price range.

Got myself a nice used (practically new, only used 4 months) Trek 3900 for $275 =D.
