What? BOSE headsets in the military?

I was just talking to my bro on Yahoo Messenger (he's in Iraq right now) and he said they have Bose headsets in their humvees.

Bose in the military, WTF?

Thats not uncommon for commercial civilian companies to outfit the military with electronic gear.

The vast majority of headsets in the commercial and military world are the good old pale green "d/c" David Clark headsets. But yes, Bose does make headsets and they do selll a fair number of them. IIRC, Bose made a bunch of headsets for the military that used a weird connector, this required equipment modifications and adapters.

I think I heard something about these BOSE headsets being defective ones they didnt wanna sell commercially. Something about bad noise cancellation or something.

Someone on these forums has a link in their sig about them... can't remember who though.

I think that was the air force.

The military like any goverment organization, does not have efficient management. There's a little too much "give your friends contracts" and "buy what's a big brand name" because the people who need the equipment aren't the one's who get to analyse their needs--someone else decides what they need.

I doubt there's many people out there that are willing to be as hard as I am on the Defense Department and what they buy. With that said and from my own Military experience (which I hated by the way! The main thing the Army taught me was that I am a civilian!) I've found most of the stuff is of the best quality for the leastest of price. Then you add to that proving that you've done just that to a zillion duplicate committees and "concerned citizens groups" and the paperwork and administrative costs make for the infamous $300.00 per unit hammers!:disgust:

Am I saying we should throw oversight out with the bath water? Nope, just steamline it a bit.

Also, our supposed whistle blower laws are a third rate joke at best. It took a man sacrificing his career, not just in the military, but severely restricting it afterwards to get the Bradley Fighting Vehicle to be made of Steel instead of aluminum which burns and many other defects in design as well and manufacturing processes on just that one vehicle.

When I was a child, I would see NASA executives and the big cheeses from Lockheed and other defense contractors on the TV and look at them with an additional reverent respect because I felt they were good men. Now I'm to the point where law allowing it, I'd happily and slowly kill each and every last one of 'em Blackfoot Indian style!

Bose's noise cancellation is pretty good for headphones that aren't in-ear.

In recent tests, it is not only pretty good, but the best. Plus you don't get ear wax on them. 🙂

Yeah, I am nowhere near a huge Bose fan, I think most of their stuff is crap, their speakers are built like alarm-clock speakers with paper-towel tubes attached to them, their game is marketing and the big shaft.

However, I saw a dude on the airplane with the QC2 headphones on, I asked him if I could try them, I was sold instantly. It became my obsession to buy them for as cheap as I could. Since I charge and pay off on my Discover, I get lotsa cashback bonus, through their double partners, which sharper image is one, I was able to pay $50 for the QC2.

I cannot stand in-ear headphones, they bother my ears way too much and most over-ear's sound cancellation isn't nearly as good.

I have had them for over a year, flown ~12 times, and I love them. I had them break a few months back, the 1st gen had a problem with the headbands cracking. I walked into the Bose store in Tyson's Galleria, told them the problem, and they took a pair out of the box and handed them to me.

Not bad. But I still won't buy their overpriced speakers.

It has become a favorite passtime to rag on Bose. While I join in on them, the wholesale (and brainless) bashing of them isn't fair. Many companies make products we hate, but then make some products we like. You just gotta separate the difference.

I just watched a Military Weapons/Information Age documentary on the Discovery Times OnDemand channel...I noticed that in some shots, soldiers were wearing bose headphones at their terminals.

Tell my about it. The Danish military presence in Iraq was delayed because the snow-shoes did not arrive on time. I am not kidding.

I had a similar experience. I too have been known to occasionally chime on on Bose bashing threads, but on a flight from Europe last year, I got upgraded to 1st class - and the movies were passed out - individual DVD players with Bose QC2 headsets. I put them on and turned on the switch - oh, my! The effect was huge. After the movie, I used them for quiet while sleeping.

When I got home, I started looking for good buys - very hard to find. Wish I had used your Discover credit gambit! Anyway, they travel with me where ever I go now. I'm afraid to use them in the car - would not be able to hear a siren. 🙂

Just took a flight from Chicago to Dulles at 10pm, slept the whole way thanks to my headphones.

I found the ipod to be underpowered for them, so I got an amp. The combo is awesome and I will never go back to normal in-ear or over-ear if I have to travel.
