What book should I read?

I need to read and analyse a book for my english class. I was thinking something classic, but not too hard. It needs to have a nicely developed theme and characters and all that...

Got any suggestions? I wanted Tolkien, but teacher said its too long (dammit, its only 2000pgs!)

any ideas?

2000 pages? My copy of Lord of the Rings is only 1000 pages (all 6 books) but I guess it's small print. Don't know of anything else Tolkien that's 2000 pages!

Hmmmm, have you read Dune by Frank Herbert? 🙂 Anytime anyone asks I'll always say Dune or LOTR since I'm a fanatic for both of them 😛

Try this one. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy
I loved this book and it also won the Booker Prize in England. The year? I don't remember.

i just finally read the phantom tollbooth this weekend. it's a kid's book but i (21 years old) thoroughly enjoyed it!!! it has great life lessons in it and is an easy read. 🙂

Just finished Candide by Voltaire, good book to write about and very short, about 120pp. I would also recommend Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin.

Beowulf was a very good book, though it's an epic poem and I don't know if you can use those. In my English class we read "Brave New World", "Fahrenheit 451", "The Stranger", and many works by Kafka. Those are very easy reading and excellent for pulling out themes, I can help you with any of them too.

'Catch-22' is a great book for analysis, not to mention about as funny as novels come. 'Candide' is a great book and funny as well, but you need to know more about the background and the philosphy of Liebnitz, whose work Voltaire was criticising in 'Candide'.

Azraele, "Grendel" is it by the same author? I doubt it but I think I might have to pick that up, sounds interesting. But how long is it?

I had always thought "A Time To Kill" was Grisham's best book, still sticks with me.

Not exactly a classic, but a nice read.

Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger is one of my absolute favorites. It's also pretty short.

I second Heller's Catch-22 but it's pretty lengthy (>450 pages).

If you're looking for a more recent read, I'd highly recommend "My Year of Meats," by Ruth Ozeki. Wonderfully written...

Fear and loathing in los vegas, been down so long i'm right side up (think thats close to the title),
catch-22 is great.. takes place during world war 2 and is basically about some bomber pilots in europe, but its hilarious.
Enders game is good, starship troopers is good if you want to analyze heinlens political messages.

Steven King, Dark Tower, thats the one Im currenly reading. Im stuck in the middle of the book and i havent read it in about 2-3 weeks, very busy, but its a damn good book!
