custom ones

Yes, several other forums in which I participate have them. I'm kind of surprised AT is so fat behind the curve on this.

I'm pretty sure it's a conscious decision and one I applaud everytime this discussion comes up.

I believe it is to maintain a certain level of professionalism on the forums. Just a quick look at certain other forums and how obnoxious they can get is all the convincing I need for allowing the decision makers to do what they do.

Same reason why there are no pictures in signatures. Might be the greatest part of our forums. I just block signatures everywhere else I go.

Didn't the "original" fusetalk release allow for a "low bandwith" option that blocked avatars? I'd love to be able to hide them as well.

I do not support custom avatars for the simple fact that you can't hide them. I don't need a pair of bouncing boobs hanging out on the side of my screen while I'm at work.

I concur, if I could hide the avatars, I would.

I wish they had a giant "BANNED" stamp for banned members. So they stick out like a sore thumb for purposes of ridicule.

either this or this.
The first one is a moving gif, but it isn't extremely annoying like most are, and the second is one I use mostly on gaming centric forums.

or badges of honor in the case of certain members.

I am.

I suppose I could manually adblock each avatar there is.

You don't need firefox to hide them. In opera, there is a little known urlfilter.ini in the profile directory, which allows wildcards. There are lists of ad and malware servers for opera's .ini format out there, and you can block items by a mouse button combo and key combo while browsing. After a few tries, you'll get the scheme of directories on the server down for what you wanna block and can block them all with a single blacklist entry in the ini file.

And there are progs that allow you to do similar with IE... and firefox of course has adblock plus.

Or you could block images from the anandtech.com domain.

I can't believe we don't have pirate and ninja avatars.

We do have a ninja avatar, see what Safeway uses?

I'd rather not block avatars, I identify people by their avatars first.

EDIT: Okay, so that one's called surgeon.gif, but I made it into a ninja.
