What Audio Compression format do you use?

I was sitting here and considering re ripping some of my CD collection to something better than MP3. I've been using Lame on the -extreme setting for years now, but after doing some listening tests I think higher quality can be achieved with another format. What format do you guys use?

Ogg-Vorbis because it's open source. AAC and WMA are good quality as well though. MP3 is outdated.

LAME Encoded MP3: "VBR 0" (Highest Quality VBR)

I hear almost (and in most cases, no) difference between lossless/CD and VBR 0 MP3.
To me, lossless is a waste of time. It would entail re-ripping all of my CDs, additional hard drive space for storing them, and additional time to move songs onto my MP3 player since everything would need to be re-encoded before being transferred.

Not to thread hijack, but I have a related question.........

Since my wife recently got an iPod Nano, I have been trying to learn and then relay to her how to play w/ her new toy.

I was pretty sure iTunes could convert her own CD's for her, but after reading a bit on Wikipedia (after being prompted by reading this thread) it appears as though iTunes has taken some hits for not having a very good MP3 encoder.

Any news on that front???

Would it be better to LAME encode them and then use 'em??

And if LAME's the best and free to ANYONE, then why wouldn't Apple just use LAME in the first place???

😕

I use EAC with a LAME encoder to rip and encode my CDs to MP3s. IIRC, LAME is under the GPL, and in doing that, Apple would have to keep that in mind when putting it into iTunes. Also, Apple probably feels that their way is best, even though it isn't.

listening tests with what?

well i heard about itunes mp3 encoder, not horrible, but not lame quality. funny how that comes out😛 just use EAC + lame, does the same ..uses cddb to tag the files and all that, pretty much as easy, and you might as well do it right the first time. you just set the preset for her. and well..apple likes doing their own thing...total control u know. and well they push aac, they don't care about their mp3, or want to make it superior u know..mp3 is after thought for apple.

192 mp3 here because its the one format you can be pretty much guaranteed to play in every software suite and portable player known to man.

Mostly Wav and flac, and some 192 wmas/mp3s... For some music, lossless is a definate improvement, just sounds more "liquid" (cant think of any other word..)

then again, my lossy files are mostly from napster (drm-stripped) and maybe they use a crappy encoder :X ..... Anyway, lossless gives a warm and fuzzy feeling, and hdd space is cheap 😉 [of course that isnt case for portable, meh]

MP3.

I don't pretend to be able to hear the difference in a 320kbps MP3 and a CD.

ive been using 192 mp3 for a while now, but thats mostly because i listen to live music i downloaded, where the quality isnt CD level anyway

i cant remember the last time i ripped a cd or what i ripped it to
