IMO, sharing music over a free p2p system for your own personal listening is not wrong.

Yeah, those artists that made the music you are sharing don't need any compensation for their effort and creativity...MORON....:disgust:

I like the ocean and parrots so that's points for being a pirate. But I dislike peg-legs and hooks for hands scare me so that's negative points.

I guess my opinion is neutral as long as I'm not being made to walk a plank. Argg.

Alright, thanks for the responses. Some very interesting ones. Some smart asses, but that's expected. :p:laugh:
This should be enough to put the finishing touches on my paper.

Companies expect students to know the latest and greatest coming out of college...

Be it Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Windows, Office, etc...

Believe it or not, students are broke and cant afford 1000 software.. Hmmm how should they LEARN IT? Pirate it fvck it.

Let the software companies make their money from the corporations who can afford it.

Argument: It's easy to rationalize but just as bad as stealing an item from a store. That said, most media companies ARE evil and a change in pricing/distribution is sorely needed (I still wouldn't steal a $500 candy bar).

Nearly unheard of in these waters.

Now the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean are another story altogether.

I owe Sony and Apple over $2000 together. The main reason I steal the software is I just don?t have the money to buy it, once I have to money to pay for the software I will be more that happy to give them the money. But I am not going to justify my actions saying that I?m ?barrowing it?, I know I stole it.

Right now I am taking advantage of the fact that I go to college and get an educational discount. $80 for Apple?s new $130 OS with free shipping? Sounds good to me!

Music is a bit deferent. I like Apple?s iTunes and buy from them all the time but some times they don?t have a song I want and then I will go download it from a P2P. And I like how you can hear clips of the songs in iTunes, if I like all the songs on an album I will go to the store and buy it so I have better quality. I do have to admit that 128K just isn?t that great if you have some really good head phones or speakers, it would be really nice if they gave the option for 320k or better from iTunes.

That?s my two bits.

Only $2000? Weaksauce. I could do that in an hour... Well, that is, if I pirated things. ;)

Like someone else said... "piracy" is a bad term, and the way it's used, it creates an automatic involuntary negative attitude towards those who practice this. I don't believe that using my father's Nortun Utilities disk makes me a pirate, even if I didn't buy the software. There's no difference between him using the program on his two home PCs in the same house, or having it installed on his main computer and giving a copy for my own main machine, at another address. Nobody would call you a pirate for borrowing books, or a hammer.

And here's a funny story - I just bought a Canon camera which also takes video clips in MJPEG format. I discovered pretty quick that all my videos have a "PICVIDEO; www.jpg.com" watermark on them... Now, Pegasus, the firm that makes the Motion JPEG decoder, wants money for the decoder (current version 3), although version 2 used to be free (and it can no longer be found on their website.) I got the MJPEG codec in a larger codec pack (Tsunami), so it didn't have a registration code (which, again, USED to be free, once you e-mailed Pegasus)... so I had to look for a code on the 'Net for my software, in order to prevent my video files from being botched. A perfect example of stupid corporate policy, leading to consumers unwittingly becoming "pirates", to use your terminology...

If I'm willing to spend money on something I will. That said, I'm very rarely willing to spend money on entertainment. I only see movies in the theater once every two months or so, and I almost never buy CDs or DVDs. So I'm not depriving the creator of monies that the would have gotten from me purchasing it, 'cause I wouldn't have bought it, regardless of availability on P2P networks.
